Mithun Chakraborty Recalls Sleeping on Footpaths Before Bollywood Stardom

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has opened up about the extremely difficult years he faced before becoming one of Bollywood’s biggest stars. During a recent conversation with filmmaker Farah Khan, the actor recalled struggling for food, shelter and work before his breakthrough in Hindi cinema.

Farah Khan shared a personal memory involving her uncle, screenwriter K.K. Shukla, who worked with Amitabh Bachchan. She recalled seeing Mithun attend parties where he would dance without charging a fee. In return, he would receive dinner.

Farah described it as real struggle, rather than simply using the word to describe the difficulties faced by aspiring actors. Mithun agreed but said his own experience went even further.

“This is beyond struggle,” Mithun said while recalling those years. He explained that he had slept on streets, footpaths and in gardens. At times, exhaustion from walking around Mumbai would leave him falling asleep wherever he could.

“Raste pe soya… footpath pe soya,” he recalled, meaning that he slept on roads and footpaths. He also remembered waking up in the same place where he had fallen asleep.

His difficulties did not immediately disappear after he entered films. Mithun made his acting debut with Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa in 1976 and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance. Yet finding consistent work remained difficult.

At one point, Mithun even lived in a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, which his family later described as his first home. According to reports, despite already having a National Award, he spent around 15 days living in the car because he had no work. He also worked as a sweeper at a gym, where he could use the shower.

His career eventually changed with Surakshaa in 1979. Three years later, Disco Dancer turned Mithun into a household name and helped establish his iconic image as the “Disco King.”

Farah also pointed to the unusual journey of an actor who began as a junior artist before becoming a major star. Mithun’s story, as he described it himself, was not simply about struggling to get a film role but surviving years of uncertainty before finding lasting success.
