Halloween is right around the corner, and that means the spookiest time of year has officially arrived. While candy and costumes are wonderful, there is nothing quite like cozying up with those you love and being terrified and horrified by a great horror movie.
This year, there are some standouts in the genre that are worth keeping an eye out for, and we thought we’d highlight some of the newest of the bunch as well as a few that are arriving in the next month or so if you want to stay on that scary train beyond Halloween.
For this list of trailers, we’ve included recently released movies and those that are coming through the end of the year. We’ve also added M3GAN as it’s one of the first horror films of 2023, so you’ll have one idea of what terrors await you in the new year.

Hocus Pocus 2

Where to Watch: Disney+
Hocus Pocus 2 arrived on Disney+ 29 years after the original and it brings back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters. This time, they are looking for revenge and will cause all kinds of chaos in Salem and beyond if they aren’t stopped by three high school students.

Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

Where to Watch: Netflix
Based on a short story by Stephen King, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone tells the story of a boy who befriends a billionaire who dies shortly after they meet. While it would seem their relationship would end there, he is able to still stay in contact with him through the iPhone the man was buried with.

Deadstream

Where to Watch: AMC+, Shudder
Deadstream follows a disgraced YouTuber named Shawn Ruddy who attempts to redeem his image by staying alone in a haunted house named Death Manor. This haunted house is no joke, however, as several people have actually died in this place.
Hellraiser
Available: Now
Where to Watch: Hulu
Hellraiser is a reboot of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic and follows a young woman struggling with addiction who discovers an ancient puzzle box. What she doesn’t realize is that this box summons a group of “sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension” called Cenobites. In this new story, Jamie Clayton takes on the iconic role of Pinhead.

Halloween Ends

Where to Watch: Peacock, In Theaters
As the name suggests, Halloween Ends brings to a close the 45-year battle between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers that began with 1978’s Halloween. This final film takes place four years after the events of Halloween Kills and sees Laurie taking the fight to this ultimate evil. V/H/S/99

Where to Watch: AMC+, Shudder
V/H/S/99 is the fifth installment of the V/H/S film series and is another found footage horror anthology movie on Shudder that tells five stories set in 1999. From a New Year’s Eve celebration gone horribly wrong to someone getting buried alive and more, there are plenty of scares waiting for those who jump back in time with V/H/S/99.

The Invitation (HR)

The Invitation starts off nice enough with a young woman named Evie getting invited to a fancy destination wedding in England by a cousin she found after taking a DNA test. Unfortunately, this wedding ends up being the farthest thing from a fairy tale.

Barbarian follows Tess Marshall, a young woman who is staying in a rental home as she interviews for a job in Detroit. What she didn’t realize was there was someone else already staying in the home and that this house hides a dark secret.

The Lair (HR)

In The Lair, Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair finds herself shot down over Afghanistan and hides in an underground bunker she believes to be abandoned. She quickly realizes she isn’t alone as deadly half-human, half-alien abominations that were created as biological weapons also call this place home.
Prey for the Devil

Prey for the Devil takes place in a world where demonic possessions are happening at an alarming rate. In response, the Catholic Church reopens exorcism schools to train priests to take on this ever-growing threat. While priests have been the only ones to have been trained in the past, Sister Ann becomes the first nun to be trained in the Rite of Exorcism and ends up running into the same demon who tortured her mother years ago.
Run Sweetheart Run

Run Sweetheart Run is a story about Cherie, a single mother who decides it’s time to enter the dating world once more. She is set up on a blind date with a man named Ethan, and he appears to be everything Cherie had been hoping for. However, his true nature eventually shows itself and he is far more dangerous than Cherie could have ever imagined.

Wendell & Wild

Wendell & Wild is a stop-motion animated film from Henry Selick and Jordan Peele and follows two brothers who choose to trade the Underworld for the Land of the Living.

Pearl (HR)

Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story is a prequel to 2022’s X and stars Mia Goth as Pearl, a woman who is living with her German immigrant parents as her husband is serving in World War I. She dreams of a life like those she sees in movies and one far away from her sick father and controlling mother. While dreaming bigger can be a wonderful thing, in the hands of disturbed individuals like Pearl, it can be deadly.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and Ralph Fiennes, The Menu is a tale of a couple traveling to an island to eat at an exclusive restaurant that is hiding some sinister secrets.

Bones and All

Cannibals in love is the premise of Bones and All, and that disturbing tidbit is the foundation of the film starring Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet. Throughout the story, these two will travel 3,000 miles across the US in an attempt to escape their past and see if their relationship can make it through.
Troll

After sleeping for a thousand years, a troll awakens in a Norwegian mountain and is set on destroying everything in its path. As it approaches Norway, a small group of people must do all they can to stop it in its tracks.
Smile (HR)

Smile is a terrifying tale that sees psychiatrist Dr. Rose Cotter witnessing people with disturbing and sinister smiles all throughout her day. The cause of this unsettling premise waits for those who can get through the scares and chills.

Chucky fans take notice, as a new doll named M3GAN is in town. This life-like doll may have been programmed to help parents and their children, but she takes her mission a bit too seriously and starts causing much more harm than good.
