Actor Shanthi Priya says she once walked out of a film starring Sunny Deol in the lead as she felt the makers were grossly deviating from what was narrated to her. The actor, Akshay Kumar‘s first on-screen heroine in the 1991 film Saugandh, recalled signing the 1993 drama Veertaa and realising things are going downhill for her once she was on the sets of the movie.

In the action drama, Sunny was paired opposite Jaya Prada while Shanthi Priya was attached to star opposite Bengali star Prosenjit Chatterjee.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Shanthi Priya recalled calling her secretary when she was treated as a “background dancer” on the sets of Veertaa. “I had signed a film with Sunny Deol called Veertaa. What they narrated me…. when I went on sets, they were doing some song sequence. It was a song sequence as if I was some junior dancer, mujhe bitha diya (they made me sit). Jaya ji was there, Prosenjit was there, who was paired opposite me.

“I felt there was something going on. My character wasn’t going as what was told to me.  So I called my secretary and told him that I doubt this is translating in the manner that was told to us. I didn’t want to do the film,” she said.

Shanthi Priya said she was doing Phool Aur Angaar back then, headlined by Mithun Chakraborty, and its writer-producer Salim Akhtar was very particular that she should be selective about her films.

“Back then, they were classified as A grade, B grade and C grade films. I was doing all A grade ones, so he was like, ‘Please don’t… It will then affect my movie also.’ So then we (my secretary and I) called the producers of Veerta and said we don’t want to do the film anymore. They gave some dhamki, that I have shot already so now what will happen…I said but the narration given to me was different. So it just fizzled out, there was no big scene. The film happened; I am still there sitting in the song. They never remove my portions, I didn’t even see the film, so I don’t know what they did with the character.”

When asked what was Sunny Deol’s reaction to her exit, the actor said, “I doubt he even knows about this; I really don’t know. Back then, we never had so much communication. There was no social media. Someone didn’t do a film, someone didn’t do it, that’s it. There was no judgment or justification. Now there is instant clarification, justification, but back then nothing of this sort would happen.”

The actor made her screen debut in 1987 with the Telugu film Kaboye Alludu, followed by her Tamil debut Enga Ooru Pattukaran the same year. In the interview, when she was asked if she has ever been thrown out of a film, the actor said, “Oh a lot of times! Sometimes for my colour, sometimes it was me, because I said I don’t want to wear a bikini. So yeah, a lot of times.”

Shanthi Priya’s last film appearance was in the 1994 Akshay Kumar starrer Ikke Pe Ikka. She later switched to TV and did shows like Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha, Mata Ki Chowki – Kalyug Mein Bhakti Ki Shakti and starred in the MX Player series Dharavi Bank.
