What are the best new movies coming out in theaters this year?
New films in 2023 include superhero fare like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Marvels,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”; blockbuster action titles ranging from “Mission: Impossible 7″ and “Fast X” to “John Wick: Chapter 4″ and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” For the family, mark your calendars for “Barbie,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Here’s what to look forward to on the big screen, plus a roundup of notable movies coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and other streaming services:
“Knock at the Cabin” – Feb. 3
Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint and Jonathan Groff star in this new M. Night Shyamalan thriller about a girl and her parents taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” – Feb. 17
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly explore the quantum realm with Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Bill Murray and new Marvel baddie Jonathan Majors as Kang The Conquerer.
“Creed III” – March 3
Michael B. Jordan directs the third “Creed” film, which leaves Rocky behind for a new conflict with an old friend (Jonathan Majors).
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” – March 17
Zachary Levi returns in this “Shazam!” sequel, with Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren hopefully providing some fun to help DC fans forget about the recent “Black Adam” misstep and the studio’s uncertain future without Henry Cavill as Superman.
“John Wick: Chapter 4″ – March 24
The titular assassin (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating the High Table but must face a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. Also starring Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, and Ian McShane, and will likely set up the spinoff movie “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” – April 7
Some Nintendo fans aren’t happy with Chris Pratt’s take on the famed Italian plumber, but it can’t be worse than the 1993 movie “Super Mario Bros.” movie. Can it? Also featuring the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, and Syracuse University alumnus Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
“Renfield” – April 14
Nicolas Cage plays Dracula opposite Nicholas Hoult as his familiar in this over-the-top horror comedy.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ – May 5
James Gunn’s last hurrah in the MCU as he takes over the DC Extended Universe next. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillian, Pom Klementieff and more return, along with new addition Will Poulter as Adam Warlock.
“Fast X” – May 19
The “Fast and Furious” franchise goes on one last ride.
“The Little Mermaid” – May 26
Halle Bailey stars in Disney’s live-action take on the adventures of Ariel and her friends under the sea.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” – July 2
One of the best superhero movies of all time, the Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” gets a worthy-looking sequel.
“The Flash” – June 16
Ezra Miller’s off-screen controversies may sink this “Justice League” spinoff, but it’ll be exciting to see Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck both as Batman in the same film.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” – June 30
Harrison Ford picks up his whip one last time for hopefully a better Indy sequel than 2008′s “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One” – July 14
Syracuse native Tom Cruise returns as IMF agent Ethan Hunt running towards another series of crazy stunts with a cast that includes Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Frederick Schmidt, Charles Parnell, and Mark Gatiss. “Mission: Impossible 7,” written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, will also have a “Part Two” in 2024.
“Barbie” – July 21
Life in plastic looks fantastic with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera and more. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig.
“The Marvels” – July 28
Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) meet in this cosmic chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Haunted Mansion” – Aug. 11
Disney’s beloved “Haunted Mansion” gets a reboot with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto, Winona Ryder, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddish, Dan Levy, LaKeith Stanfield, Hasan Minhaj and more.
“The Exorcist” – Oct. 13
David Gordon Green directs this Blumhouse sequel to the original 1973 horror classic. Starring Leslie Odom Jr. and original “Exorcist” actress Ellen Burstyn.
“Dune: Part Two” – Nov. 3
Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and more continue Denis Villenueve’s slick adaptation of the Frank Herbert story.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” – Nov. 17
Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage lead this prequel to “The Hunger Games” films, centered on a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth).
“Wonka” – Dec. 15
Timothée Chalamet plays a young version of Willa Wonka, before the events of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

There are also movies coming to streaming services, such as “Beverly Hills Cop 4″ (Eddie Murphy); David Fincher’s “The Killer,” “Havoc” (Tom Hardy), “Heart of Stone” (Gal Gadot), “Maestro” (Bradley Cooper), Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts film “Unfrosted,” and Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” on Netflix; “Shotgun Wedding” (Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel), “Red One” (Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans) and “Somebody I Used to Know” (Alison Brie, Dave Franco) on Amazon Prime Video; “Flamin’ Hot” (Eva Longoria), “Quasi” (Broken Lizard) and “Boston Strangler” (Keira Knightley) on Hulu; “Napoleon” (Joaquin Phoenix), “Argylle” (Henry Cavill), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Leonardo DiCaprio), and “Ghosted” (Chris Evans, Ana de Armas) on Apple TV+. Most are expected to be released in 2023, but don’t all have premiere dates set.
Movies filmed in Syracuse to look for include “Manodrome” (starring Adrien Brody and Jesse Eisenberg); “Shelter in Solitude” (written by and starring Cazenovia native Siobhan Fallon Hogan); and four American High films (“Empire Waist” starring Rainn Wilson; “Sid Is Dead” starring Joey Bragg and Mary Stuart Masterson; “Miguel Wants to Fight”; and an untitled Kevin James film). Release dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks and months.
