There’s no aroma of fresh popcorn and the movie poster signs normally displayed for Movies 6 at Shawnee Mall are now empty as Movies 6 has closed.
Shawnee area residents were surprised Tuesday by a Facebook post announcing Movies 6 at the mall was closed permanently. The post was made by Jones Theatres, which also operates Cinema Centre 8 on North Harrison.
The post, along with signs at the theater, noted that Jones Theatres and AMC thanks everyone for their patronage and said they hope to see guests at the Cinema Centre 8 location at 3031 N. Harrison.
That news prompted sentiments of fun times at Movies 6 and comments from moviegoers about the end of an era for the mall.
A few hours later, Shawnee Mall announced on its Facebook page that a new movie theater will be coming to the mall sometime this year.
“Shawnee Mall is excited to bring Golden Ticket Cinemas to our guests in 2023. This is a movie viewing experience unlike any other in Shawnee,” that post reads. Golden Ticket Cinemas is headquartered in Durham, North Carolina.
On Wednesday, Cinema Center 8 also announced it has changes and improvements coming to its Cinema Centre 8 location this Spring, including all new seating for those theaters.
