Dwayne Johnson to Star in New Fast & Furious Standalone Movie

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is returning to the Fast Saga as Luke Hobbs, but not necessarily the 11th mainline Fast & Furious movie – instead, he’s getting another standalone film.

Johnson tweeted the news today, saying that the movie “will serve as a fresh, new chapter & set up for FASTX: Part II.” He also addressed the widely publicized behind-the-scenes feud between himself and Fast star Vin Diesel.

“Last summer Vin and I put all the past behind us,” he wrote. “We’ll lead with brotherhood and resolve – and always take care of the franchise, characters & FANS that we love.

Chris Morgan, a creative staple in the Fast & Furious series, is writing the script. Further details, including who else will appear in the standalone entry, haven’t been revealed.

Obviously, this isn’t Johnson’s first standalone adventure in the Fast franchise. That came in 2019 with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, which saw Hobbs in an unlikely team-up with Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. The first spinoff in the Fast series, it pulled in a solid $760 million globally.

Warning: Spoiler for Fast X below.

While the standalone movie is news, Johnson’s return alone shouldn’t be shocking for Fast fans… considering he made a surprise appearance in Fast X’s post-credits scene.

While we don’t yet have a release date, the detail that it will serve as a bridge between the two parts of Fast X – and thus, come out before Fast X: Part II – is an interesting one. We don’t yet have a release date for the second part of Fast X (which may actually be the middle of a trilogy, Diesel recently teased), but it’s expected to come sometime in 2025.

Meanwhile, Fast X continues to chug along at the box office, having just recently crossed the $500 million mark globally. While it’s struggled in the U.S., it remains a reliable draw internationally.
