After entering the home of every age group since 1949, LEGO became the most profitable movie franchise of recent years thanks to Warner Bros. From The Lego Movie, its 2019 sequel, The LEGO Batman (2017). However, hopes for a sequel are very low for Will Arnett’s World’s Greatest Detective because of the deal LEGO signed with Universal in 2020.
Chris McKay, director of the 2014’s The Lego Movie, The Tomorrow War, and Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula, said that the universe he carefully built would not expand because of the deal and said they had a lot of fun developing the sequel. The director said in an interview with Uproxx, ”Because it’s with Universal. LEGO is with Universal.” he said.
McKay said Batman and the Justice League would face modern-day problems, and the film was similar to The Godfather II. They were going to delve deeper into the Caped Crusader’s relationship with Superman in the axed sequel.
”We had a really fun script with Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron, wrote a really fun kind of Superfriends. The sequel would’ve been a quasi Superfriends movie and the structure was going to be a sort of Godfather II kind of thing with Batman and the Justice League facing a modern-day problem, Lex Luthor and OMAC, while at the same time flashing back to the reasons why Batman and the Justice League – and in particular, Superman – have bad blood. It was going to explore Superman and Batman’s relationship in a very different way than you’ve ever seen it portrayed, including Superman’s alienation from humanity and how hard it is to truly be friends, real friends, for years. It was ultimately going to answer the question: How do you become Super-friends. And there was going to be a crossover with a major franchise that can only happen in a LEGO movie.”
McKay Talked About His Nightwing Movie
Chris McKay’s relationship with Warner Bros. isn’t just about LEGO and the Batman movies. Although the filmmaker was announced as the director of the solo Nightwing movie in 2017, Bludhaven’s hero was forgotten due to the chaos in the DC. Although McKay says he continues to develop the film, there is no clear date yet. But McKay is still hopeful for the movie, ”Well, no one ever really said that they’re not making that movie. They sort of … deprioritized it. You know what I mean?” he said.
McKay said he doesn’t think the studio canceled the movie, but priority was given to projects like Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Wonder Woman. The director stated that the regime change at DC Studios was effective in this state, ”It was very clear that they were like, look, we have to… depending on which regime you’re talking about, because obviously I went through a couple.” McKay said.
He said he hopes DC’s new boss, James Gunn, will re-approach the project and is very keen on making the movie.
”There were other things. They had the Zack Snyder version, and then they had to figure out how they were going to answer the other films they were making from those movies. Whether they’re going to do more Wonder Woman movies and that sort of thing. And all that kind of thing. So our movie has got deprioritized, but no one ever said, “We’re not going to make that movie.” They just said, “Right now we have to fix these things.” And then the regimes changed. And I’m hoping now with James Gunn that maybe we can re-approach that. I’d love to still make that movie.”
