Amy Schumer confirms real reason she quit Barbie movie

Amy Schumer has spoken about her departure from the forthcoming Barbie movie.

The Trainwreck star had confirmed her involvement in the live-action film in 2016, where she was expected to play the lead, but just a few months later said she was leaving the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Not everyone had been happy with the casting, with many taking to social media to voice their, often unkind, opinions.

At the time, the comedian and actress was quick to speak up against the body shaming she had experienced, saying “deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand”.

Margot Robbie was cast as Barbie following Schumer’s departure, opposite La La Land‘s Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Speaking to Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen, Schumer was asked for a “specific reason” she left the film and whether she would be watching it.

She said she was looking forward to the highly anticipated release: “I can’t wait to see the movie, I think it looks awesome.”

She added: “I think we said it was scheduling conflicts… That’s what we said but it really was just creative differences.”

“But there’s a new team behind it and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool, so will be seeing that movie.”

Andy Cohen questioned her further, asking: “Was it that it didn’t feel feminist and cool when you were involved in it?”

Amy replied to this with only one word, saying: “Yeah.”

Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie also stars Emma Mackey, Nicola Coughlan and Dame Helen Mirren, with new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa as another version of Ken. It is due for release in cinemas on July 21.
