Batman is known for fighting crime from the shadows, but modern Batman movies are showing one big change to how he battles criminals.
Modern Batman movies are increasingly making one significant change to the Dark Knight. As one of DC Comics’ hallmark characters, Batman has been adapted in movies and television since the early Batman serials of the 1940s. Batman has also been portrayed in live-action by a wide array of different actors over the course of his cinematic career.
With so many Batman movies and live-action Batman actors, each has given his own unique interpretation of the Caped Crusader. Often, he tends to be a solitary crime fighter battling villains in Gotham City, while Ben Affleck’s portrayal in Zack Snyder’s DCU movies brought Batman together with the Justice League for the first time cinematically. However, one core character trait of Batman’s has been progressively shed in his most recent cinematic portrayals.
Batman Is Coming Out In The Daylight More & More
Batman is well-known for fighting crime almost entirely at night, but contemporary Batman movies have begun to show him donning the cowl in broad daylight more and more. This was first seen in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which Christian Bale’s Batman battles Bane (Tom Hardy) and the League of Shadows in the movie’s climactic early morning battle. Later, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Batman leads his team in the Knightmare future in the daylight, and also stands with triumphantly with the Justice League in the sun after defeating Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds).
Matt Reeves’s The Batman would also continue showing the Dark Knight out during the daylight hours, with Robert Pattinson’s Batman aiding rescue efforts by daylight following Gotham City’s flooding. DC’s multiverse adventure The Flash will also feature both Affleck and Michael Keaton’s Batmen, and set photos show the former’s version of the character riding the Batcycle in the daylight. While the idea of a nocturnal superhero like Batman fighting villains during the day might seem somewhat jarring, it is one of the better changes Batman has experienced in his filmography.
Why This Change Is Good For Batman
While it was commonplace for Adam West’s gadget-wielding Batman to be out during the day in his 1960’s show’s heyday, Batman’s subsequent retreat into the darkness in all media has had a somewhat limiting effect on the movies he appears in. If Bruce Wayne can only become Batman by night, that obviously restricts the kinds of stories that can be written for him. Multiple versions of Batman being seen in operation during the day has opened many more possibilities for when and how he can wield his Batarangs, whether on solo missions or with the Justice League.
To be sure, Batman still clearly prefers to work at night, with his growing daylight appearances still far from overtaking his work at night. That is not likely to change any time soon. Still, whether it is Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Robert Pattinson or any other Dark Knight, the time of day in which Batman leaps into action is becoming more and more irrelevant to modern Batman films.
