That said, recent years have managed to piggyback off past movie successes to offer unexpected and scary tales. But for the new year, Netflix has offered up some terrifying stories that are as creative as they are visceral.
The Invitation Brought a Clever Retelling of the Dracula Story
Vampire movies have shown every possible facet of the medium. From classic tales like Dracula and Interview with the Vampire to more monstrous looks at the genre like Fright Night and 30 Days of Night, there’s always something to explore. The Invitation is a new look at these classic tales as it’s a Dracula-esque story that focuses on a main character that’s more than just food for the monster. In fact, it’s a tale of survival about a woman who thought her extended family would be normal when, in reality, they’re anything but. Its conclusion offered vampires in their best and worst forms and proved that, even after decades, the genre still has something new and exciting to show off.
No One Gets Out Alive Is Equal Parts Ghost Story and Slasher Movie
Author Adam Neville has made a name for himself with the horror books he’s written, including The Ritual. That said, he also wrote a unique ghost story that balanced slasher elements, titled No One Gets Out Alive. Like The Ritual, this film was made into a movie and explored a deeper look at human nature and the genuine struggles they have to go through, juxtaposed with an unexpected and unsettling supernatural element. This film follows a woman named Ambar, an illegal immigrant trying to survive in the United States. However, a string of bad luck left her more or less stuck in a home with a strange man and spirits warning her she was in danger. While the tale is straightforward, the finale’s twist is unexpected and almost completely changes the genre.
Don’t Listen Builds Suspense With Each Moment
Ghost stories have always been straightforward in their explanation as they mainly exist to offer quick jumpscares and clever suspense. But to do this, the tales often follow a family where one or more members must uncover a mystery involving the spirits and avoid a tragic end. However, as the years have progressed, the methods to convey these stories have become more clever. A great example of this can be seen in the film, Don’t Listen, which follows a young boy who goes missing after speaking with spirits on a walkie-talkie. After he disappears, the parents attempt to find him but uncover terrifying surprises that reveal evil intent and a race against time to save their sun.
Scream 4 Proves Some Franchises Get Better Over Time
The Scream franchise may have saved the slasher genre with its ability to tell a scary mystery with a meta-commentary. But what was more surprising was that the formula never got old after three sequels. In fact, it grew as the genre evolved around it. Scream 4 was a perfect example of this, as it brought Sidney Prescott back to Woodsboro to stop a new killer that wanted nothing more than to get famous in the modern age. By poking fun at itself, the film served to reinvent the wheel again and offered a solid sequel that any slasher fan would love and should see.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Takes Karma to a New Level
After Scream, the late ’90s was home to stylized and clever slasher films that decided to give their victims something more substantial to chew on as characters. I Know What You Did Last Summer took that concept to the next level by providing the killer some sympathy as a figure of karma rather than blind rage. The film follows a group of teens who, after killing someone in a hit-and-run, try to cover up the body and move on. But someone saw them and decided to exact justice by killing them one by one as they tried to figure out who did it. The film may feel like a shameless Scream copy, but it’s much more.
