2022 has been a memorable year for Tamil cinephiles, thanks to some of the blockbuster films that gave them ample adrenaline rush, a few heartwarming movies and a couple of sensational comebacks which also minted money at the box office. 

As they bid adieu to the year which provided them lots of surprises and hopes, movie buffs are now looking forward to 2023, which is likely to offer numerous experiences, that include much-awaited box office clashes, big ticket flicks, larger-than-life characters, festival releases and seamless entertainment. The sequel of Ponniyin Selvan 1 is inarguably the most-awaited Tamil movie in 2023. The first part went on to gross 500 crores, and film lovers hope that the second installment would surpass the numbers easily. The highlight of the Mani Ratnam directorial is expected to be stupendous performances from Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Trisha and Jayam Ravi. 

One of the much-expected Pongal releases, the Ajith-starrer is set to hit the screens on January 12. The heist drama, directed by H Vinoth, stars Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Kokken and Prem in key roles. Ghibran’s music and Supreme Sundar’s action choreography are likely to be the highlights of the movie.

Vamshi Paidipally’s family drama, starring Vijay in the lead, is another Pongal release which will be released on January 12. The songs composed by Thaman for the movie are already a huge hit. Rashmika Mandanna, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Jayasudha and Prakash Raj essay pivotal characters.

Rajinikanth’s action drama is said to be hitting the screens as a summer release. The Nelson Dilipkumar directorial has Ramya Krishna, Yogi Babu, Vinayakan and Vasanth Ravi essaying notable roles. Anirudh’s music is expected to be the USP of the movie apart from the Superstar’s screen presence.

The sequel to one of the iconic blockbusters in Kollywood is eagerly awaited by Tamil movie buffs. They are curious to know how Kamal Haasan would impress them this time with his charismatic performance aided by Shankar’s directional skills. Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet and Siddharth among others will be seen in important roles.

Lokesh Kanagaraj, who became the most sought-after Tamil filmmaker in 2022, is coming up with an untitled project with Vijay. The gangster movie, which has Mumbai as its backdrop, is expected to offer a never-before-seen experience to film lovers. With Anirudh on board to compose music, Kollywood fans are going to celebrate every update on the project.

Sivakarthikeyan’s action drama being helmed by National Award winner Madonne Ashwin is expected to take the former to the next level in terms of stardom. A sneak peek video which was released from the movie sometime ago has made fans pin high hopes on the film.

Arun Matheswaran’s action adventure movie with Dhanush is another project moviegoers are looking forward to. The film’s story is set in the 1930s and Priyanka Mohan plays the female lead in it. GV Prakash’s music is touted to be one of the highlights of this ambitious flick.

The news of Pa Ranjith directing Vikram was received with much excitement by movie buffs. Tipped as a social drama set against the backdrop of Kolar Gold Field in the 19th century, the film stars Parvathi Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan essaying significant characters.   

Obeli N Krishna’s gangster drama with Silambarasan, the official remake of Kannada movie Mufti, has enough reasons to keep fans waiting for it. The actor’s unusual appearance, presence of Gautham Karthik and Priya Bhavani Shankar, and music by none other than AR Rahman are some of the aspects audiences are looking forward to in the movie.
