‘That’s not the way to make movies…’

James Cameron recently slammed both series in an interview with the New York Times. In reference to his future movie Avatar 2, he said, “I also want to do the thing that other people aren’t doing. When I look at these big, spectacular films — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college.”

The director continued by saying he disagreed with Marvel and DC’s approaches to movies. As he discussed the characters in these movies, he said, “They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”

James is the only director in recent history to have produced two movies that, at various points, topped the global box office. Aside from Titanic and Avatar, he is also credited with helming the first two instalments of the Terminator series, the 1986 science fiction classic Aliens, and the action movie True Lies. A sequel to James’ 2009 hit, Avatar: The Way of Water, will be released in December. There will be three more sequels.
