The upcoming film Slash/Back blends the sci-fi, horror, and thriller genres to tell the story of a group of Indigenous teens on Baffin Island out to stop alien invaders. IGN can exclusively debut the trailer for the movie, which can be viewed via the player above or the embed below.

Slash/Back – which debuted at the SXSW Film Festival to rave reviews – marks the feature film directing and screenwriting debut of Nyla Innuksuk, an Indigenous filmmaker who, in a statement to the press, called Slash/Back “a personal film. It deals with teenagers processing shame in their Indigeneity as I did when I was growing up. It channels the stories I wished I would have seen when I was a child in love with movies.”

Innuksuk, who co-wrote the film with Ryan Cavan, called the setting of Nunavut “one of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet” and added that “I think it’s important to be able to see yourself in different types of stories, and this is primarily a movie for Inuit.”

The following synopsis sheds more light on what Slash/Back is about:

“Set in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the majestic mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean, Slash/Back opens as the village wakes up to a typical summer day. No school, no cool boys (well… except one), and 24-hour sunlight.

But for Maika and her ragtag friends, the usual summer is suddenly not in the cards when they discover an alien invasion threatening their hometown. These teenagers have been underestimated their whole lives but, using makeshift weapons and their horror movie knowledge, they show the aliens you don’t f*** with the girls from Pang.”

The cast includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth, and Chelsea Prusky.

RLJE Films and Shudder will release Slash/Back in theaters and on VOD and Digital on Oct. 21.
