Striking the right chord with extreme mental health issues like suicide and depression in movies is critical. Filming characters that deal with such issues is crucial, as they tend to impact a large section of the audience. While some may have missed it, there are a few Bollywood movies that depicted such stories in a sensitive manner.

‘Chhichhore’ (2019)

One of the underrated and must-watch movies, Chhichhore narrates a traumatising ordeal of a family wherein the son attempts suicide upon failing a competitve exam. The movie established an impressive way of starting a conversation between parents and kids on such delicate issues. The parents, played by Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor, attempt to reinstate hope in their child through a series of amusing, relatable and inspiring stories from their college days.  

‘3 Idiots’ (2009)

3 Idiots showed suicide in a sensitive way

3 Idiots was an excellent attempt at showcasing the dark perils of over-ambitiousness harboured by parents and ultimately dumping them on their children. In a couple of scenes, two students, played by Ali Fazal and Sharman Joshi, land in academic troubles. They attempt suicide to escape the hardships that would have ensued. The sequence subtly evoked the unspoken pressures and mental health issues students face.  

‘Masaan’ (2015)

Masaan begins with a harrowing and dark sequence. Police harass Richa Chadha and her boyfriend when they storm into their hotel room and threaten to rat them out to their parents. Fearing the arrest and embarrassment, her boyfriend locks himself in the bathroom and ends up committing suicide. The scene successfully portrayed the consequences of problematic and unlawful moral policing. 

‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ (2010)

Karthik Calling Karthik touched profound mental health disorder, schizophrenia, in which the patient has a tough time keeping the track of reality. The lead, played by Farhan Akhtar, grapples with low self-confidence. He receives mysterious calls that ultimately betters his life, but goes downhill in the later part of the movie.  

‘Jai Ho’ (2014)

Jai Ho featured a scene in which Jai (Salman Khan) fails to help a disabled girl, Suman (Genelia D’Souza), owing to which she fails an exam. Suman, in turn, ends up committing suicide. The incident impacts Jai so much that he creates a system in which he influences citizens to help each other.
