Pierce Brosnan’s recently-released heist comedy The Out-Laws follows a soon-to-be-married banker (played by Adam DeVine) whose life turns upside down when the bank he works at is robbed. And, he can’t help but suspect that the criminals are his in-laws, the town’s infamous out-laws. The action-comedy keeps you engrossed as you watch a simple banker’s life upended. While there are loads of heist films (the Ocean series included), it’s difficult to find a funny one. If you want comic relief with engaging plot lines, these heist comedy movies should be on your stream list.

1. The Love Punch – Amazon Prime Video, YouTube

Pierce Brosnan isn’t new to the heist comedy genre, having done this fun caper before The Out-Laws. The James Bond superstar pairs up with talent powerhouse Emma Thompson to take us on an unforgettable journey. The story revolves around a divorced couple Richard and Kate, with two children. When Richard loses his business and their lifelong investments and savings, he is forced to seek his ex’s help to avenge the wrong done by corrupt businessman Vincent. The duo makes an elaborate plan and recruits their friends to steal a 10-million-dollar worth diamond from Vicent. Things get interesting when Vincent’s fiancee learns of their motives.  

2. Tower Heist – YouTube, Apple TV, Google Play Movies

What do you get when you have comedy kings Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, and Matthew Broderick along with Casey Affleck in the same frame? A laugh riot, what else! This goofy, adventure flick follows a group of individuals working at the elite apartment building called The Tower planning to rob a wealthy billionaire for his Ponzi scheme that made them lose their pensions. The underrated movie ticks all the right boxes of a comedy heist film and ensures that there’s never a dull moment.  

3. Happy New Year – Netflix, YouTube

A star-studded cast featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, and Vivaan Shah, in pivotal roles, is bound to raise the expectations of entertainment. More so, when it is helmed by Main Hoon Na director Farah Khan. And, the movie doesn’t fail to engage you at any point. The movie starts with Charlie (Shah Rukh) assembling a motley group of individuals to pull off a diamond heist. He wants revenge against a man who had wrongly accused his father of stealing diamonds. From grand sets to amazing music and dialogues that will make you go ROFL, this movie is a must-watch especially when you are feeling low.  

4. Bank Chor – Amazon Prime Video, YouTube

Champak Chandrakant Chiplunkar (Riteish Deshmukh) is a simple Marathi man with an extraordinary dream – to rob a bank. To set his plan in motion, he enlists help from his dense friends – Genda (Vikram Thapa) and Gulab (Bhuvan Arora). The trio successfully manages to implement the robbery. But, things go awry when a short-tempered CBI officer, Amjad Khan (Vivek), is assigned to the case. Champak’s plan goes out of hand when one of the hostages takes control of the bank to steal a disk at the behest of a minister. The plot twist at the end will leave you shocked. The light-hearted action drama deserves to be watched at least once. 

5. Going in Style – Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Senior citizens and best friends Willie, Joe, and Albert are distraught when the company they worked for is sold and their pensions are cancelled. To overcome their financial crisis, the trio decides to rob a bank – Joe had once witnessed a bank robbery and uses his experience to orchestrate the heist. They take on different disguises and put their plan into action. Things spiral out of control in the bank when the FBI gets involved. The movie is quite a refreshing change from the regular heist films headlined by younger actors. It’s also endearing to see lifelong friendship withstanding the test of time in an age where relationships come with an expiry date. Veteran actors Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin are a perfect fit for the roles of Willie, Joe, and Albert respectively. 

6. Kajillionaire – Amazon Prime Video

The movie revolves around a 26-year-old emotionally stunted Old Dolio Dyne (Evan Rachel Wood) who is manipulated by her parents to partake in petty crimes. During one of their heists, the family crosses paths with a charming stranger, Melanie (Gina Rodriguez), who joins their robbery group, setting off a series of out-of-control unfortunate events. The movie is slow-paced unlike other heist films and requires attention on the screen and patience for the characters to work their charm on you. 

7. Foolproof – MX Player

As a part of the game, Foolproof, friends Kevin, Sam, and Rob create perfect heist plans – including bringing in requisite gear and technical support – but never implement them. While this feeds their need for thrills, it also lands them in trouble when a renowned criminal, Leo Gillette, burgles Sam’s apartment and steals their plan for a jewellery warehouse, and successfully implements it. He then threatens the trio to make a plan for robbing a bank or else he’ll share their plan of the jewellery robbery as evidence with the police. What follows is a chaotic journey of three friends trying to wriggle their way out of the mess. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Kristin Booth, Joris Jarsky, and Sir David Suchet in pivotal roles.
