Why Celebrities Are Turning to Social Media to Encourage Voter Registration

If you’ve scrolled through social media these last 24 hours or so, you may be wondering why so many celebrities have posted about voter registration in the United States.

From actors to activists and everyone in between, celebrities have been using their social media influence to encourage their followers to register to vote–and for a good reason.

On Sept. 20, the U.S. celebrated National Voter Registration Day, an observance used to educate people on their voting rights and encourage them to register to vote.

And from Sept. 19 through Sept. 25, it’s National Voter Registration Week of Action, followed by National Voter Education Week from Oct. 3 through Oct. 7. So from now until mid-October, it’s expected that celebrities will choose to use their voice to ensure yours is heard come Election Day.

According to NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org, 60 percent of eligible voters are never asked to register, but now, with multiple high-profile voter registration campaigns, that’s no longer an excuse.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest names used their platforms to share educational information about voter registration and voting rights in preparation for the 2022 midterm elections.

A few even partnered with organizations dedicated to growing voter registration–like When We All Vote and I Am A Voter–to provide further resources ahead of future elections.

In a video by When We All Vote, YouTube star Bretman Rock encouraged the public to take this call-to-action seriously.

“If we’re going to celebrate this day right, I need you to do these three things,” Rock said.

Those things include checking your voter registration status online, texting three friends, and asking them to “check their registration status, too,” the organization’s creator and former First Lady Michelle Obama chimed in.
