Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana did not have a simple relationship, but rather complex with many ups and downs.
Diana met the Queen in 1980, having previously dated her son Prince Charles to marry him only a year later, in July 1981 The relationship between the princess and the queen started restlessly, according to royal biographer Andrew Morton. In her book Diana: Her true story – in her own wordsMorton writes that “in the early days, Diana was simply terrified of her mother-in-law. She observed the formal burial—she bowed deeply every time they met—but otherwise kept his distance.”
After Prince Williams was born in early 1982, Diana gradually began to take on roles representing the royal family, and the relationship between the two began to assume its form. According to what royal expert Ingrid Seward wrote in her 2002 book The Queen and Dee, Elizabeth showed more “understanding of Diana’s difficulties” and they developed a strong bond. Diana even once told Seward that she had “the best mother-in-law in the world.”
Five years later, the rumors of Charles begins an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowlesand things only got worse from there.
Diana sought the Queen’s help amid Charles’ deception
It is reported that the princess leaned against the queen, who expected her daughter-in-law to stand by her man. Morton explained that Diana found “perhaps a rather unlikely ally in the palace in the Queen, whose understanding and helpful attitude did much to encourage Diana to become a soldier”.
But the years passed and Diana suffered in silence, without receiving the support he expected from the queen. Likewise, the Queen grew weary of Diana’s emotional reactions afterward not knowing how to help her daughter-in-law.
In 1992Charles and Diana split publicly, and in 1995 the queen finally asked for a divorce. At this point, Diana had gone “her own way,” giving personal interviews and becoming “responsibility” for the royal family, as Seward noted.
A year after their divorce, Diana died in a car accident in Paris with her partner Dodi Fayed.
