What to wear on the big festive day this year

[ad_1]

Every year, I want to dress up for Christmas – not in a suit, exactly, but I’d like to look as stylish as our festive table does. But every year, I’m busy with kids/presents/ham-basting duties and my plans to look dapper and polished fly out the window. What can I wear on Christmas Day that looks great, is comfortable and can be changed into quickly? – Santa Suit

Casual but chic Christmas Day options from Venroy’s Casablanca collection.

Dear Santa,
Of all the considerations we make for Christmas Day, fashion is rarely one of them. And yet what we wear on December 25 is important. As you so correctly point out, it’s crucial to be comfortable. When you are comfortable, you can eat ever more Christmas pudding, or pavlova, or whatever festive dessert your family has appointed the sweet of the day. (We are a pudding family, for the record. With cream, never custard.)

The great thing is that our climate means it’s hot on Christmas Day. Lean in. Men should go for chic shorts and loose linen or cotton shirts (choose a print to disguise any errant gravy or prawn mayo spills). Venroy offers shorts (and shirts) in light, breathable fabrics with elastic waistbands. Ahhhh – can’t you just taste that glazed ham? Other great options include Jac + Jack and James Perse, available here at Mr Porter (its own in-house label, Mr P, often has top picks, too).

This Winnie Midi Dress from Alemais ($495) is calling out to be worn on Christmas Day.

When wearing shorts, ensure the look is pulled together with loafers or boat shoes – never thongs, unless you’re eating at the beach on Christmas Day.

Women, of course, can feel fabulous in a floaty dress. I love Lee Mathews for its silk maxis, and Husk offers a wide range of cotton drill and poplin frocks in a variety of colours and prints (it has its own label and also stocks brands such as Munthe, Gestuz and Alemais. (Speaking of Alemais, it’s one of several Australian brands making dresses that desperately want you to wear them on Christmas Day. Kate Ford is another.)

For women who don’t want to wear a dress, why not a chic pyjama-style set? Kate Spade has cute options. Opt for a wide waistband (elasticated, obviously) and match your pant to your shirt. I also like Maison Essentiele, Bond Street and Daily Sleeper. Bonus – you can wear your swimsuit underneath and whip it all off for a dip after lunch. Of course, you don’t want to look as if you are really wearing pyjamas, so add accessories (a statement cuff or necklace) and a polished pair of sandals for oomph.
