While Valheim does give players some freedom when it comes to customizing their character, the game could use more fashion options when it comes to capes and clothing. Those entering into this game’s hostile world likely don’t have fashion on their mind immediately, but after securing a base, players will want to explore some customizable aspects. At Valheim‘s workbench and forge, there are plenty of options to improve a character’s looks.

There are different armor sets in Valheim that can change the outside appearance and strength of a character, as well as capes that can provide unique bonuses. While there are plenty of options on the surface, the game doesn’t contain much in the way of customization options.

A Lack of Fashion Options in Valheim

While clothing styles may not be at the top of every player’s mind, what their Viking wears has an impact on strength and resistances. Armor and capes play an important part in measuring up against the enemies of each biome in the game. Each progressive one increases the difficulty while providing the opportunity to create stronger weapons and armor. What plays the most important part in surviving are the armor sets in Valheim. While stylized from the materials that are used to create them, these armor sets are unchangeable once built.

Aside from the three pieces that make up armor sets, capes can also be crafted in Valheim to add a minor armor bonus. There are currently five different capes that players can create and wear in the base version of the game: the Deer Hide Cape, Troll Hide Cape, Wolf Fur Cape, Lox Cape, and Linen Cape. Of these, the Toll Hide, Wolf Fur, and Lox variations also offer players bonuses to further justify their creation.

The customization options in Valheim are limited in general, however, especially for this clothing option. Of the capes in the game, only the Linen Cape can be crafted in multiple colors. When crafting the Linen Cape for 20 Linen Thread and 1 Silver, players can customize this clothing option by clicking the style option underneath its name. This leaves little room for players looking to customize their Viking.

Improving Fashion in Valheim

Despite the current outlook, there is plenty of room for improvement. Capes would be greatly improved with color and style options for each of the existing designs. One of the brightest spots is the Wolf Fur Cape, which genuinely appears as though it came from one of Valheim‘s wolves. Any character with this cape on will appear with the head of a wolf on their shoulder, and this should be the precedent for all other capes. For example, the Troll and Deer Hide Capes only really vary in color while their source material are dramatically different in basically every aspect. These could see alterations to include Troll hair for the former and antlers for the latter.

There is also plenty of room for new designs based off other creatures and enemies. Passive creatures such as Crows, Gulls, and even Leviathans could be the basis of some impressive capes. On top of this, the list of hostile creatures that could be the source of inspiration is even longer. Valheim‘s Stone Golems, Fulings, Ulvs, and Draugrs each could contribute to new fashion options when it comes to capes. But the fashion update shouldn’t stop there, as players should be able to alter the look of their armor sets as well. While the freedom shouldn’t be too extreme, it would certainly add to the game if the developer’s allowed color variations and small changes to the different armor sets.

Valheim is available now for PC, and releases in early 2023 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
