Unsworth previews visit to Scunthorpe – News

Despite the pain of Saturday’s defeat at Wrexham, David Unsworth took great encouragement from the performance and will be looking for his side to build on that performance against Scunthorpe United tonight.

Unsworth commented on how pleased he was with the overall performance at the weekend, but added that he wants his players to be braver when under pressure as he looks ahead.

“The performance on Saturday was fantastic, it gave us a good platform to build on, now we have to make sure we build on that,” he said.

“Naturally we relaxed a bit in the second half and I asked the players to be braver and enjoy those periods of the game where we are under pressure so we can see the game out and get a result.

“No matter what level you play, you’re always going to be under pressure at some point in the game and you have to learn how to deal with it and heal from it.

“They have to enjoy defending, they have to enjoy heading the ball out of the box when it comes in, and that’s where we have to get mentally if we want to continue well.

“If we can continue to improve as we have done since I have been at the club, I will be happy, but what must follow a good performance is a win.”

With injuries a problem for the team this season, Unsworth was pleased that no one else joined the absentee list after the weekend fixture.

Scunthorpe are currently 21st in the table following an improvement in form under the guidance of Tony Dawes, including a win over Dorking and Dow in Torquay on Saturday.

“There are no new injuries which is a massive plus for us so we can go again with the same staff at our disposal which is encouraging,” he added.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the players back on the pitch and seeing them raise the bar like they did on Saturday.

“It gives me another game to assess the players, see how they are on the pitch and adjust things here and there to move forward.

“As I’m starting out, every game is a learning curve for me and I enjoy the challenge.

“We’ve come together really quickly and improved a lot in just one week and I’m looking to continue that improvement tonight.”
