What we know about Donald Trump’s tax returns

Donald Trump’s aides fired at each other over their future prospects as Rudy Giuliani and other Trump allies persisted in their efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the immediate hours after the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.

Those were the revelations we learned when the House special committee investigating the Capitol riot released its final report this weekend, including a massive new collection of documents and transcripts of testimony gathered during the investigation.

Among the documents released are text messages from Mr Trump’s White House staff as well as members of Congress.

Text messages from Mr Trump’s most trusted aide Hope Hicks revealed she was furious that the violent uprising would hamper her future job prospects.

“For one day, he terminated any future opportunity that did not include speaking engagements at the local chapter of the proud boys,” she wrote in one message.

“And all of us who haven’t had jobs lined up will be forever unemployed.” I am so angry and upset. Now we all look like domestic terrorists.

Separately, the House Ways and Means Committee last week released Mr. Trump’s 2016-2020 tax returns after a years-long legal battle.

Don Jr. scoffed at calling the January 6 rioters “mostly tourists”

Donald Trump Jr. was mocked for calling the rebels on Jan. 6 “basically tourists.”

In a video, the former president’s son claimed that the “vast, vast majority” of people who were arrested for storming the US Capitol were “tourists” taking selfies and standing “behind the velvet ropes”.

Mr Trump Jr even claimed that many believed they were simply allowed to be there – after they stormed the building and assaulted dozens of law enforcement officers to get inside.

“Everybody was wondering why innocent people who were just there – many of whom I think went through the doors thinking at that point that people could get in there,” he said.

He continued: “The majority of these people did not. They were mainly tourists. You watch people taking selfies. They stand behind the velvet ropes.

Mr Trump Jr was criticized for his comments on Twitter – with users calling him a “lie” and a “gaslight” given the widely available footage of rioters attacking police and chasing lawmakers.

“Today’s word of the day: Gaslighting,” one person tweeted.

“Please. Please. Despite all the abundant previous evidence, this is so implausible it’s utter nonsense, it’s actually a deliberate lie,” another person added.

Trump moans GOP midterm losses ‘not my fault’

Donald Trump moaned that the GOP’s disappointing performance in the midterms was “not my fault,” instead claiming it was the result of the “abortion issue.”

In a series of New Year posts on his Truth Social platform, the former president sought to shift the blame to other members of his own party, who he said had “handled the issue badly” “especially those who were adamant that there should be no exceptions”.

“It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the midterms. I was 233-20!” he said.

“It was the ‘abortion issue’, mismanaged by many Republicans, especially those who strongly insisted on no exceptions, even in the case of rape, incest or the life of the mother, that lost a large number of voters.”

Mr. Trump has also published lists of candidates he says have done well because of his endorsement or have done poorly because of his criticism. He ignored a long list of candidates he supported who failed in the elections.

Leaders of Jan. 6 panel fear GOP will release names of national security officials who testified

Leaders of a January 6 House investigative committee asked the White House to help protect the identities of key witnesses who testified about what White House officials fear is President Trump’s desire to go to the Capitol with a rowdy crowd by his supporters indicates that he intended to stage a coup against the government he ruled at the time.

In a letter to Richard Sauber, a White House lawyer who serves as special counsel to President Joe Biden, Reps. Benny Thompson and Liz Cheney — the panel’s chair and vice chair — noted that the panel had reached an agreement with the White House office to obtained testimony from certain White House personnel on the condition that the identities of such witnesses remain confidential.

Mr. Thompson and Ms. Cheney said those White House officials had “provided very important information to the committee’s investigation” and their identities had been withheld, but warned that disbanding the select committee at the end of the 117th Congress means that the former members of the panel “will no longer exercise control over this material and thus cannot guarantee the fulfillment of the commitment to preserve the confidentiality of the identity of the witnesses”.

ICYMI: Trump made millions from his father’s inheritance while his own properties failed

Trump’s business empire relies on public image and public whims — and the cost of bucking those trends has been evident in the second year of his presidency. The Independent’John Bowden reports.

Tax returns released Friday by the House Ways and Means Committee show a jump in income for the former president in 2018, a year after he took office and placed his business empire in a blind trust controlled by his elderly sons .

The growth stemmed from the sale of numerous real estate properties, including some given to the then-president as part of his inheritance. Sales of those properties that Mr. Trump built or bought himself have fared much worse and have seen an overall loss on the market this year.

Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the House special committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol, accused GOP leader Kevin McCarthy of giving Donald Trump a political lifeline after the riot, opening the door to “crazy elements” in the recent one to be controlled by the Republican House of Representatives.

“He’s the reason Donald Trump is still a factor,” Mr. Kinzinger told CNN on Jan. 1. “He’s the reason some of the crazy elements of the House still exist.”

Donald Trump Spreads Conspiracy About Georgia Election Worker

Donald Trump peddled a right-wing conspiracy theory about a Georgia election official in his latest ill-advised rant on Truth Social, after the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol released another collection of documents from its investigation.

The former president took to the podium late Monday to take aim at Ruby Freeman, a Fulton County election official who has become a target of Mr. Trump’s aides after the 2020 presidential election as they peddled baseless lies accusing her in participating in voter fraud.

After Mr. Trump lost the election to Mr. Biden, Ms. Freeman and her daughter and campaign colleague Wondrea Moss were confronted by his aides at their home in Atlanta.

Footage of the two women performing their ballot processing duties was then circulated online.

Mr Trump’s supporters falsely claimed the footage showed the two women engaging in election fraud by entering fake votes to support Mr Biden.

The baseless lies made the two women the targets of both in-person and online harassment from Mr Trump’s supporters, with the abuse reaching such levels that Ms Freeman was forced to move home.

Now, two years later – and after the lies were debunked by election officials in Georgia – Mr Trump continues to push conspiracies to his supporters.

On Truth Social, the one-term president — who lost GOP support after announcing a third bid for the White House — posted a series of ramblings calling out Ms. Freeman in all caps.

“What will the Great State of Georgia do with the Ruby Freeman MESS?” Why don’t we just tell the TRUTH, get rid of the turmoil and blame, and take our country back from the evils and betrayal of the radical leftist monsters who want to see America die?” he muttered. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
