Trump impeachment live: Who are the six co-conspirators in Trump’s Jan. 6 indictment?

Special counsel Jack Smith announced the indictment of Donald Trump in the investigation on January 6

Donald Trump has been indicted on four counts by a grand jury hearing evidence in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment also details six unnamed co-conspirators who are now believed to have been identified.

The former president broke the news on Truth Social that he would soon be indicted. It wasn’t long before his campaign started raising funds from the news.

This is Mr. Trump’s third criminal indictment, his second federal indictment and his first for alleged conduct while he was president.

He was ordered to make an initial appearance in federal court in Washington on Thursday while the case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who was appointed by Barack Obama.

In a brief statement, Mr Smith placed the blame for the violence squarely on Mr Trump’s shoulders, saying the January 6, 2021 riot “was fueled by lies”.

Trump’s campaign said he had always followed the law and characterized the charge as a “persecution” reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

“President Trump will not be deterred by disgraceful and unprecedented political remarks!” he added.

Trump supporters view the latest indictment as evidence of a crime

Former President Donald Trump and his supporters are reacting to a third impeachment against him with a familiar pattern: deflecting with unrelated charges, distracting with misleading statements about the charges and demonizing the prosecution.

Instead of convincing followers of the seriousness of the charges, Tuesday’s indictment was held up as evidence of a conspiracy to oust Mr. Trump and a continuation of efforts by Democrats, the media and the so-called deep state to meddle in national elections.

For years, Mr. Trump has told his supporters that the election cannot be trusted and that he is the victim of a corrupt government and media persecution.

With that narrative endorsed by conservative news outlets and amplified on social media, it’s only natural that many of Trump’s supporters buy into it, said Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a New York University historian who studies authoritarian propaganda.

FBI arrests another Capitol insurgent

A Donald Trump supporter involved in the Capitol riots was arrested yesterday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The suspect was reportedly the subject of a conspiracy theory on Tucker Carlson’s former Fox News show.

Raleigh Runner was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri and faces five federal charges, including obstructing, obstructing and interfering with law enforcement officers during a civil disturbance, NBC News reported.

Joseph McBride, a lawyer who has represented several defendants since January 6, argued on Carlson’s show that Mr. Runner was “clearly a law enforcement officer” and “agent provocateur” who dressed up as a Trump supporter to get the fan to make the former president look bad.

The former prosecutor explains why Trump was the focus of the January 6 indictment

Donald Trump’s latest federal indictment isn’t the most sweeping indictment to date, but it may be the most thorough.

That was the reaction of legal analysts and journalists this week after Jack Smith laid out the Justice Department’s initial charges against Mr. Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, much of his behavior in the weeks leading up to and during of the January 6 attack remains unresolved in the indictment.

A former deputy assistant attorney general and federal prosecutor who analyzed the indictment in an interview with The Independent said the decision was likely intentional to ensure the focus of the case remained on Mr. Trump’s efforts and potentially streamline the path to trial.

Comment: “Jail for the boss?” It’s tempting to think of Trump in an orange jumpsuit

The Boss Jail is supposed to be a joke, not reality. Certainly the Founding Fathers could not have been expected to foresee such a turn of events when they created the American republic.

Mr. Labatt said the former president would be fingerprinted and photographed as a regular person if charged in District Attorney Fannie Willis’ probe into attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 Georgia election.

“Unless someone tells me otherwise, we’re following our normal practices and no matter what your status is, we’ll have a picture ready for you,” Mr. Labatt told WSB-TV.
