this Saturday, November 26, at 11 a.m. in Couva, the Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Faith will present their first book. This year the CHF sisters will celebrate the 75th anniversary of their Trinidad Foundation.
In December 1947, this congregation from Glasnevin, Ireland, established a foundation in Woodbrook. The Catholic News reported this in the issue of December 27, 1947. “Presence and Action” began with the arrival of Sister Monica McSherry, the Superior General, Sr. Colmcille Kilgallen and the first seven Irish religious sisters, and with it their immediate establishment of schools throughout the country. The island. The original letter of invitation to the 1946 Congregation came from His Grace Archbishop Finbarr Ryan OP.
This book includes extracts from their 75-year archive, including private letters, minutes of meetings and personal photographs. The book is arranged chronologically by decade and geographically maps their work done in Trinidad, from Woodbrook to places such as Couva, Siparia, Penal, Sangre Grande, Valencia, Moruga, Pembroke Street, St. Ann and Matelot.
Prepared and compiled by archivist Dr. Quinn Johnson, this historical record draws from their many documents and is supplemented by personal interviews with the sisters in Trinidad. It is a tapestry between the formal and the ordinary that weaves together several stories about the work of these religious sisters.
This book sets the national record, the work of about 70 women. It adds to the cultural conversation – their contribution to education in Trinidad, starting in 1947 until today. Another key theme that appears in the book is social justice. It finds expression not only in education in both urban and rural Trinidad, but also in places such as East Port of Spain and the Remand Yard at Port of Spain Prison.
Trinidad District Leader, Sister Juliet Raja, along with the other Sisters look forward to your presence at the Couva presentation this Saturday. His Majesty Archbishop Robert Rivas OP will be in attendance to mark the importance of the archives. These extracts from their personal archive have been beautifully selected and visualized in this limited edition book. Presence & Action is a wonderful Christmas present.
