Spy thrillers are always difficult. It can either keep the audience hooked from the very beginning or the opposite can be the case. Many directors have tried to dabble in this genre, some have failed and others have succeeded. In times when OTT is booming, taking on a spy thriller is risky. But with Mukbir – The Story of a Spy, it looks like the risk was worth it. The eight-episode web series went live on Zee 5 and here is its full review.

What are you talking about?

Mukhbir is a story about a young spy named Kamran played by Zain Khan Durrani who is cocky and witty in his own way. He is not one to set goals, but rather goes with the flow. He works under spy KSK Murthy, played by Prakash Raj, who is determined to go to any length for his country. It is set in the era after the Sino-Indian War and shows the hard times when people worked with less technology. Kamran is put on a mission to cross the border and share news of all the evil attack plans being formulated in Pakistan. He has to befriend a Pakistani family and do his job. Does the plot remind you of Raazi? Well, it isn’t.

What’s new?

Mukhbir’s plot is something that will keep you hooked till the very end. This isn’t one of those spy thrillers that takes years to develop its characters. Rather, it is a fast-paced series with very clear text. Zain Khan Durrani emerged as a fine actor in this one, of course, with the powerhouse acts delivered by a supporting cast like Prakash Raj, Adil Hussain and others. As the story reveals the human side of the spy agent. He may be cocky who seems like a no-strings-attached guy, but when he has to cross the line by killing an innocent, all the emotions come flooding into him. He’s not one of those overconfident guys, rather take it… The job done is a kind of spy who has emotions, but work comes first. Harsh Chayya definitely excels in powerful acting.

What is not?

While the clear plot is a bonus, it feels rushed at times. The romance between the leads seems forced. Also, Mukbir definitely emerges as a series that has the potential to grab attention.

BL Verdict:

Mukbir – A Story of A Spy should be on your bucket list this weekend. It’s a gripping spy thriller with a lot of heart.

BL rating: 3 stars
