The United States has removed the in-person interview requirement for many visa applicants in India by December 31 this year, a senior US diplomat told Indian community leaders.

Those applicants eligible for exemption are students (F, M and Academic J visas), workers (H-1, H-2, H-3 and individual L visas), culture and exceptional ability (O, P and Q visas).

“This is much needed support for visa applicants. It would be very helpful for our friends and closest family members and it would take away a lot of their worries and take away the inconvenience,” said Ajay Jain Butoria, a South Asian community leader and advisor to US President Joe Biden on Asian Americans. , after his meeting with the Assistant Secretary of State for South Central Asia, Donal Loo, as reported by PTI.

To be eligible for the expanded interview waiver program, the news agency said, applicants must have previously obtained any category of U.S. visa; have never been denied a US visa and have no indication of visa inadmissibility or potential visa inadmissibility.

To identify such candidates, the US Embassy will launch more than 20,000 additional dropboxes for spring 2022 in New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai, the report said.
