Every family has drama, no matter how famous they are. Celebrities are not immune from having drama with their parents. Some of the most celebrated and award-winning stars have had their parents’ cause drama, only the stakes are much higher.
Usually the drama comes when business and family are mixed, but sometimes parents can become jealous and get a little bit too involved in the lives of their children. From family feuds and addition to court cases and arrests, these families have caused plenty of drama to embarrass their famous kids.
Here are some of the biggest dramas that happen when fame and family mix and even the most famous stars have to deal with embarrassing and dramatic.
12/12 Britney Spears’ Dad Put Her Under Conservatorship
One of the most high profile cases of family drama in recent years, Britney Spear‘s father,Jamie, had his pop star daughter placed in conservatorship for over 13 years.
Britney claims that her dad, Jamie Spears, stripped her of her freedom, controlling her life from the people she dated to her reproductive rights. This conservatorship was legally overturned in 2021.
Neither of her parents were present when she married Sam Asghari in 2022. She has frequently taken to social media to denounce her family.
In a July 2022 Instagram post, she wrote of her mother Lynne: “you abused me … yes I will say it and it blows my mind that you still play the prayer loving mom.”
“He loved the control he had over me, 100 percent,” the singer testified ina 2021 court hearing, adding, “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK and I’m happy. If I said that enough, maybe I’d become happy. … I’m in shock. I’m traumatized. … I’m so angry it’s insane.”
11/12 Leighton Meester Sued Her Mother
Her mother then counter-sued the actress for $3 million if she didn’t raise the monthly allowance to $10,000, claiming Leighton owed her fees for working as her manager and helping her jump-start her career. The judge ruled the case in Leighton’s favor.
10/12 Alec Baldwin’s Controversial Voicemail
Although it appears they have made up, and he has changed his ways, Alec Baldwin makes this list for a famous incident.
Some years ago Baldwin left a voicemail message to his then wife Kim Basinger, when he called his then 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, “a rude, thoughtless little pig,” going on to tell her, “you don’t have the brains or the decency as a human being.” The voicemail was leaked by Basinger herself.
In 2017’s Comedy Central Roast Ireland Baldwin made light of the situations. “It’s good to be here,” she said after introducing herself to her own father. “I almost didn’t even know about it because I haven’t checked my voice mails from my dad from the last 12 years or something?”
9/12 Meghan Markle’s Talkative Father
As soon as her engagement to Prince Harry was announced, the former lighting director took to the British press to say his side of the story. In 2018 it was revealed he was staging photos for the press.
Last minute he declined the invitation to her wedding, citing his heath as the reason. “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” she wrote in an official statement before her big day.
He then spent the following months doing live interviews, photoshoots and press. Thomas Sr. spoke to the Daily Mail for nearly nine hours over the course of three days in July, voicing incendiary opinions about the royal family as well as about Meghan herself. He described his actress daughter as “cold” and even suggested that “it would be easier for Meghan if I died.”
In a CBS interview, Markle said she felt betrayed and shocked at his behavior. She also said it’s difficult for her to “reconcile” her father’s actions because she “genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain” to her son, Archie.
8/12 Ariel Winters Became Emancipated From Mother
The actress even said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporterthat she was prepared to go to foster care to escape her mother’s abuse, until her older sister Shanelle Gray agreed to take her in. Her sister became her guardian.
The actress claimed that her mother, Crystal, would withhold food, force her to attend parties and build famous communications, and would dress her provocatively. Her mom still denies these allegations and continues to speak to the press about her famous daughter.
7/12 Rihanna Dropped Legal Case Against Her Father
Rihanna accused her father, Ronald Fenty, of misusing her name to benefit his own entertainment company, and sued him in 2019 for false advertising and invasion of privacy. She would later drop the case.
She had a rocky relationship with her addicted father growing up. She has spoken about his abusive attitudes to her mother. He left her family at a young age, forcing their mother to work more and fo Rihanna to raise her siblings.
The pair stopped talking to each other for two years after the We Found Love singer sent him home for being drunk during her 2008’s North American tour.
6/12 Lindsay Lohan’s Parents Were In Trouble With The Law
Lindsay Lohan was 11 years old when her appearance in The Parent Trap made her a star. She soon became a teen icon, although she is now as famous for her off-stage behavior as her film roles. The behavior of her parents, Michael and Dina, is just as infamous as Lindsay’s herself.
Dina used her daughter’s fame and notoriety to make a profit. She even had a reality TV show where she took a camera crew to her daughter’s birthday party!
Lohan accused her father, Michael Lohan, publicly of domestic violence. He was imprisoned through much of her life for fraud. Lindsay Lohan would later reveal that her father’s one and only visit to the set of The Parent Trap concluded with his arrest for violating his parole. In February 2020, Michael was arrested for allegedly assaulting his ex, Kate Major. Dina Lohan commented saying that she’s “seen it all before.”
Dina was seen gallivanted around Hollywood nightclubs with her teenage daughter, encouraging her wild party behavior and drug taking. Dina was arrested for a DUI in 2007.
5/12 Oliver Hudson Wished Father ‘Happy Estrangement Day’
For Father’s Day in 2015, the Rules of Engagement actor had an unusual message on Instagram for dad Bill Hudson. He posted a photo of him and his sister, Kate Hudson, with their father alongside with wishing him a “Happy abandonment day.”
A few days later, he posted a picture of himself with Kurt Russell, who’s been with Oliver’s mom, Goldie Hawn, since the ’80s with the caption “Happy Father’s Day Pa…” Kate Hudson also posted a similar message.
Their estranged father, Bill Hudson replied to the posts via the Daily Mail to say he was disowning his children. “I say to them now, ‘I set you free” He also requested they stop using their birth name in their acting careers.
“hey are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.” This post actually led to Oliver and Bill reconciling after a 12-year estrangement.
“I had an amazing three-hour conversation with him. And we’re texting, and we’re trying to see each other. So we might be mending something,” Oliver told Andy Cohen just five months after the Instagram post.

Angelina Jolie’s public feud with her actor father Jon Voight became very ugly in the early 2000s.
The drama started in the 1970s after Jon and Angelina’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, separated. “When my father had an affair, it changed her life,” wrote Jolie in a New York Times article. “It set her dream of family life ablaze. But she still loved being a mother. Her dreams of being an actor faded as she found herself, at the age of 26, raising two children with a famous ex who would cast a long shadow on her life. After she died, I found a video of her acting in a short film. She was good. It was all possible for her.”
Jolie was estranged from her father for decades de to his behavior during her childhood. In 2002 she legally changed her surname to distance herself from the actor.
In 2002, Jon insinuated that his daughter had “mental problems.” He spoke about Jolie ignoring him at public events and spoke about her mental health battles.
”I don’t want to make public the reasons for my bad relationship with my father…. After all these years, I have determined that it is not healthy for me to be around my father, especially now that I am responsible for my own child,” she had said.
However, in 2010, Jolie’s then-husband Brad Pitt encouraged a reconciliation. “He’s been very good at understanding they needed their grandfather at this time,” Jolie told Vanity Fair in 2017. “I had to do a therapy meeting last night and he was just around. He knows kind of the rule—don’t make them play with you. Just be a cool grandpa who’s creative, and hang out and tell stories and read a book in the library.”
3/12 Eminem’s Mother Sued Him For His Song Lyrics
Eminem has been vocal about his dislike for his mother, Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers.
In songs, “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” and “Without Me,” the rapper alleged that his mother had been abusive and addicted to drugs. The lyrics were so incendiary that she filed a defamation lawsuit against her famous son.
“I wasn’t happy when he made up a whole new life for himself — what mother wants to be known as a pill-popping alcoholic who lives on welfare? To tell the truth, I was heartbroken. The lies started coming thick and fast — and not just from Marshall. … I think he’s forgotten the good times we had,” she told MTV News in 2008, whilst promoting her memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem.
The case was settled out of court in 2014 and Eminem would later apologize in his song, “Headlights.”
2/12 Jennifer Aniston’s Mother Wrote A Tell-All Book
Friends actress Jennifer Aniston has had a notoriously strained relationship with her mother, Nancy Dow. The former actor and model was publicly critical of her daughter and her acting career.
In 1999, Nancy Dow published a book entitled From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir which led to the pair not speaking for two years. Despite their up and down relationship, Jennifer Aniston paid for her mother’s bills before she passed away in 2016. Aniston was written out of her mother’s will.
Jennifer told The Hollywood Reporter, “She was also very unforgiving. She would hold grudges that I just found so petty.”
1/12 Ryan O’Neal Tried To Bond With Daughter Tatum On Reality TV
Actor Tatum O’Neal has been estranged from her acting father Ryan O’Neal for most of her life. Tatum O’Neal was just 10 years old when she became the youngest Academy Award winner in history after she took an Oscar for best supporting actress after staring in 1974’s Paper Moon alongside her father.
Ryan O’Neal acknowledged his forthcoming as a parent in 2012 and also admitted there “was violence at times” in his relationship with Farrah Fawcett. Three of O’Neal’s children, including Tatum, have experienced addiction issues.
The pair tried to reconcile their differences on the TV show Ryan & Tatum: The O’Neals that aired on OWN in 2011, but the reunion was short-lived. The death of Farrah Fawcett helped mend their relationship, but it looked like the show did little to fully repair the damage. The family did come together for a photo in 2020, with her son Sean McEnroe taking to Instagram to celebrate the family reunion.
