A weekend of heat and humidity set the table for severe thunderstorms in Ontario Sunday evening resulting in major damage in some areas. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), storms produced one confirmed tornado as they raced across the region, causing power outages, property damage and personal injuries.

Tornado warnings were issued for areas north of Belleville along Highway 7 in the towns of Madoc, Tweed, and Actinolite Sunday evening. According ECCC, the severe storms produced a tornado near Marmora, Madoc and Actinolite.
Tornado warnings were also issued around Frontenac Provincial Park north of Kingston, later expanding to communities like Gananoque and Brockville as the storms pushed eastwards.
The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) and ECCC sent teams to the area Monday to survey the damage.
“There was a long track of damage due to at least one tornado and downburst winds,” states ECCC.
The damage has been preliminarily rated as a high-end EF-1 with peak wind speeds near 175 km/h. The final track length and strength of the winds associated however, are not yet determined.

Sorry for the late follow up on the storm, got closed in by the supercell in Madoc and the tornado was just 1-2 km in front of our vehicle. My friend and I are safe but not sure about others at this point. We experienced blinding rain and extreme winds #onwx pic.twitter.com/5pDH3ROexN
