Chicago Police is the darkest of the three One Chicago series, without any of the antics that sometimes occur fire and with. The more intense storytelling is clearly working for the crime drama as it prepares to enter its tenth season, and this time around it has a whole new theme, as showrunner Gwen Sigan shared with CinemaBlend. She explained what PD team writes, and two stars weighed in on what this means for their characters, who may be somewhat “broken” by this point.
The Theme for season 9 of PD was “at home” and the episodes followed further into the lives of the characters when they were not at work. Upton and Halstead got married, Ruzek wanted to buy a house for Burgess and Makayla, and Atwater even had a long-awaited love interest. For season 10, showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed to CinemaBlend over the phone that the theme is “a savior.” When I asked if this applied to multiple characters or focused on one in particular, she shared:
It’s everywhere. You will see it in the cases we tell. You’ll definitely see it in all of our characters and what they’re going through this year. And then we have these amazing guest stars who are coming in and will be recurring characters. Their plot is very much related to the same idea of trying to save something, and that question we keep coming back to is, can the broken be saved? Sure, you could argue that many of our characters have been through enough to be considered a bit broken. So that’s what we’re writing for the season.
Honestly, most of the Chicago Police the characters went through enough just last season that it wouldn’t be unreasonable for them to feel broken. Gwen Seagan has already previewed “messy” after Anna’s death for Upton, Halstead and Voight, with Upton suspecting that the sergeant is blaming her for the tragedy. Unfortunately, Halstead probably won’t be a part of how PD embraces the theme of the “savior” very long, because Jesse Lee Soffer is slated to leave in the first half of season 10, which undoubtedly means big changes.
While viewers will have to wait until Season 10 begins to find out who exactly needs rescuing and which characters might be qualified to help, two stars shared their thoughts. Jason Bege and Marina Squerciati, who play Hank Voight and Kim Burgess, respectively, spoke with CinemaBlend and other outlets ahead of Season 10. When I asked what the theme means to their characters, Bege said:
The subtitle of “Savior” will be “Can the Broken Be Saved?” Hank is as broken as we’ve seen him since at least his son died, and I believe Anna’s death probably triggered that loss because he’s prone to to be somewhat of a solo recluse, socially and so I think more than he knows that these relationships are important to him. And then when they take them away, it’s a real loss.
Voight lost a lot of people over the years (including Olinsky under tragic circumstances at the end of season 5), so it says a lot that Anna’s death broke him the most since his son Justin’s (played by Josh Segarra) died. None of the intelligence cops have time for much of each other’s social lives, and Voight’s general isolation will obviously make losing Anna even worse. But will this be the thing that unseats Voight? Bege continued:
I think it will survive, but it is difficult. So he’s going to have to get some coping mechanisms and there are layers of progression or healing that will work themselves out as we go forward, but he’s going to be different. Just like any other human being who has to deal with this kind of loss. It’s a personal thing that’s a little bit new, I think, for our show, because it’s a little bit more personal for the characters, what’s going on now. It’s not just a cop show. It’s still a cop show, but I personally think it’s the life of a cop. I find this interesting. It’s an interesting balance to navigate not only in terms of the production, but also as an actor. So it’s fun.
It’s unclear whether or not these “coping mechanisms” will actually be helpful in how Voight copes, but it’s safe to say that he won’t recover from Anna’s death by the end of the season 10 premiere on September 21 . PD telling more personal stories is an interesting prospect.
However, Gwen Seagan also confirmed to CinemaBlend that the season will still largely consist of “great stand-alone movies and great cases” and “maybe six episodes” of serialization, like with Season 9’s Anna storyline. Of course However, the “savior” theme won’t just apply to Voight, and Jason Beggi also mentioned to the press that Burgess filled that role as well:
She’s also Makayla’s savior and I think Ruzek… a lot [what] what draws him to Kim is to save him somehow.
Burgess built a small family unit with Makayla, whose trauma might have overwhelmed her if her adoptive mother hadn’t taken her in and cared for her. Ruzek also rose to the challenge of raising the little girl, even though Burgess was the only one with parental rights on paper. (The things it got ugly between them when Makayla was kidnapped after Burgess pointed this out.)
The unconventional family unit seemed to strengthen by the end of Season 9. However, according to Marina Squerciatti, Makayla’s rescue of Burgess wasn’t a one-way street. The actress said:
I also think Makayla definitely saved Kim as well. I think after the miscarriage it was a really brutal time and they kind of had that connection. So both are lifeboats for each other.
It sounds like the INT cops could use all the “lifeboats” they can get heading into Season 10. A big question is what kind of support Upton will need once Halstead is written off, though. At this point, there aren’t any exact details on how Jesse Lee Soffer’s character will retire, but other than Halstead just being off-screen but still around, it seems safe to say that Upton might need a support system.
