Though it is technically possible to change it by filling out some legal documents, a person’s name is typically thought of as being one of the most permanent things in their possession. With this in mind, choosing the best name for a baby is incredibly important and something that many expecting parents spend a lot of time agonizing over.
As is often the case, movies can be a great source of inspiration in this regard and can often be seen to have influenced baby name trends. There are plenty of unique names that were made popular by movie characters, typically due to the fantastic performances of their respective actors or how likable the characters are.
1/7 Noah (The Notebook)
When it comes to names that were made popular by movies, Noah is usually one of the first that springs to mind. Of course, it’s been around since biblical times, yet it was Ryan Gosling’s performance in The Notebook that helped to bring it to prominence in the modern era.
Whether it was a case of new mothers wanting their sons to grow up to be as caring and attentive as the romantic movie character from whom the name was taken or their feelings toward Gosling himself is unclear. One thing that is certain though is that the number of Noahs definitely shot up in the mid-noughties.
2/7 Hermione (Harry Potter)
The name Harry has always been a fairly popular one and so it was no surprise to see its usage rise following the success of the Harry Potter books and movies. Less predictable, however, was the influx of young girls named Hermione in the years that have followed.
Though not a completely unheard-of name, it wasn’t exactly a common one either. However, thanks to the success of the franchise and some stellar performances from Emma Watson, there are considerably more Hermiones these days than there were before the popular book and movie series.
3/7 Cullen (Twilight)
Being named after a character from Twilight seems like a surefire way to get teased at school, so those who were probably won’t be shouting it across the playground at recess. Ignoring, for a moment, that it belonged to one of the worst fictional characters of all time though, it’s actually quite a nice name.
Edward Cullen served as one of Bella’s two main love interests in Stephenie Meyer’s book series and was played by Robert Pattinson in the big-screen adaptations. It’s one of many iconic characters played by the Hollywood heartthrob, with Pattinson having also played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter series and the titular character in 2022’s The Batman.
4/7 Jasmine (Alladin)
There are a lot of people who were named after Disney Princesses, with the likes of Ariel, Belle, and Aurora all being popularized by their respective movies. Another name that was made popular by a Disney movie is Jasmine, who served as the titular character’s main love interest in 1992’s musical masterpiece Alladin.
Jasmine’s seems to have caught on more than some of the other Disney Princesses’ names, as although it is still fairly unique, it doesn’t stand out quite as much as some of the others. It’s perhaps for this same reason that there aren’t too many people named Pocahontas, Rapunzel, or Cinderella, though all three are still pretty cool names.
5/7 Anakin (Star Wars)
Though opinions on them have softened in the decade or two since their initial release, to say that the Star Wars prequel trilogy was pretty bad would perhaps be a bit of an understatement. Despite being marred by obnoxious CGI, nonsensical plot points, and boring political discourse, there were still a few things that most agreed that the movies got right.
John Williams’ score was fantastic and Darth Maul’s double-bladed Lightsaber was incredibly badass. Then there was the name Anakin, which, despite the character’s heel turn toward the end of the trilogy, was generally accepted to be a really great name. So much so, in fact, that like other popular Star Wars names like Luke and Kylo, it was given to plenty of newborn children in the years that followed.
6/7 Amelie (Amelie)
As anybody who has ever been there will already know, exotic isn’t really a word that could be used to describe modern-day France. The same cannot be said of the name of the titular character in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 rom-com Amélie, however, which, to all but the French, conjures up thoughts of a mysterious woman from faraway shores.
At least that was the case around the turn of the century before people began naming their daughters after the Audrey Tautou character. These days it’s a lot more common and so no longer evokes those aforementioned feelings of distant lands. Of course, it remains a great movie-inspired name nonetheless.
7/7 Logan (X-Men)
Few actors are quite as synonymous with one single role as Hugh Jackman is with Wolverine. Sure, he’s played plenty of iconic movie characters throughout his career, but when it comes to ass-kicking comic book characters who are perfectly cast, his will always be the first name that springs to mind.
It’s perhaps for this reason that many parents decided to name their children after the character. As cool as naming a child Wolverine may sound on paper though, most opted for the character’s actual name instead of his adamantium-infused superhero alter ego. It’s as well they did, really, as Logan is a mighty fine name.
