THE Manila Times takes a breather from its coverage of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s first State of the Nation Address to take a quick look at the much anticipated “fashion event” that has served as a side show to the annual event that has taken a backseat to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Below are some of the Times’ Lifestyle’s picks, starting with the fashion standouts.

There is no one else to talk about but Vice President Sara Duterte’s attire at the House of Representatives. The Bagobo Tagabawa traditional dress has fashionistas caught between Super Like and Not-So-Like. Inday Sara being Inday Sara–unconventional and spunky–she definitely rocked the indigenous look and should be applauded for choosing an outfit that honors her Mindanaoan roots.

Symbolically, it is a message–loud and clear–from the former Davao City Mayor, who sprung to the Vice Presidency, that she continues to be one with them even as she assumes a national post. A standout style overall, the but is because of the towering feather on her headpiece that maybe she could have done away with.

Neophyte Senator Mark Villar and his wife Emmeline were head turners on the Senate’s red carpet this morning for their simple but elegant style. Lifestyle is still digging the deets on the designer/s behind his barong and her be-sashed modern Filipiniana long dress, but each piece is a winner. Their impeccable choice of fabric–very possibly the ultra-delicate pineapple fiber–already draws top marks for each outfit, not to mention the expert needlework on both on a material that can easily hang awkwardly if not carefully handled. Bravo! Standout style indeed!

Happy congratulations are in order for Senator Nancy Binay and her forever couturier Randy Ortiz who did a splendid job this year! Always the first to get a thumbs down or turn into a meme in past SONAs, Binay’s traditional terno is just right–“tamang tama” lang as we say in Filipino. There’s nothing amiss in this all-pina fabric gown and its sweet and intricate callado sampaguita embroidery. Well done! Standout style for you, Sen. Nancy.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros’ baro’t saya stood out for looking very much like a ninang at a wedding. The Joel Acebuche design made from Aklan Piña fabric registers quite a dated look, and the senator’s hasty pusod just dates it more.

Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara and wife Tootsy are a stylish staple in the Senate. Eyes are always on the senator’s better half in fact for her simple but elegant looks. Even when she wore a dress from her college years, she was a stand out, but for this SONA–well, let’s just say it’s probably a one off. She stood out for wearing a piece that is a bit too busy with its large lace patterns that already go from top to bottom and yet still ends with a frilled hem.

Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero is dapper as ever as he makes his Senate comeback with his famous wife, Heart Evangelista. Her sophisticated modern mid-calf terno is a Mark Bumgarner, of course. A standout style without question, the draped bodice and embroidered skirt in pristine white is simply classic, and Evangelista’s long flowing hair and mid-parted fringe throw in that casual and effortless touch that make her picture perfect as always.
