Wigan Athletic are nine games into their return to the Championship and the early signs suggest they’re here to stay.

The international break will allow Leam Richardson and his squad to reflect on what has been an impressive start to the new campaign – with the Latics currently sitting just two points outside the top six despite playing one game fewer than most of the division.

Richardson looks to have brought the good times back at the DW Stadium, which may mean we’ll see a few famous faces there this term.

With that in mind, we’ve highlighted the celebrities that supposedly support Wigan Athletic…

Richard Ashcroft

We start with some Brit Pop royalty in The Verve lead singer Richard Ashcroft.

Born in the Wigan area, Ashcroft is a boyhood fan of the Latics and even played for their youth team back when he harboured aspirations of making it as a footballer.

He eventually turned his focus to music and would go on to write songs including Bittersweet Symphony and Lucky Man.

Kay Burley

Sky presenter Kay Burley is another of the famous faces that support the Latics, having been born in Wigan.

Now the host of Sky News breakfast show, Burley began her career at the Wigan Evening Post and Chronicle. She has confirmed her support of Wigan on social media in the past.

Stuart Maconie

Stuart Maconie is perhaps Wigan’s most vocal celebrity fan.

The radio DJ, presenter, and journalist, who currently has a show on BBC Radio 6 Music, was born in nearby Whiston but went to school in Wigan and has even appeared on Football Focus to discuss his love for the club in the past.

Paul Rowley

One of Maconie’s former BBC colleagues, Paul Rowley is another of Wigan’s famous fans.

Rowley left the BBC after 47 years in 2021 but remains a lifelong supporter of the Latics and has covered them up and down the country over the past two decades.
