give me some truth a wise man once said. And the moving picture gods did indeed look down on us and grant that wish. Soon – very soon – we were up to our ears in cinema verité, TV docu-series, true-crime dossiers, compilations of archival footage, homages to famous folklore, cultural time capsules, 24-shot (or X amount of pixels) wall reports in a second and more. And lo and behold, it was good, even if it was a lot. Some of them were actually great.
We now have such a steady diet of documentaries available for consumption through so many different venues and in such a variety of formats that trying to narrow down an annual “best of” list for non-fiction and multi-episode series feels like a herculean effort. (Next: Our ranked list of the best beach sand of 2022) But not all papers are created equal, and the baker’s dozen we choose for our top picks below represent that work that reminded us why we continue to love what documentarians can achieve with cameras, microphones, vision and the ability to be in the right place at the right time. The 13 films below can run the gamut from a musical doc about everything that goes on to a marathon revisionist history lesson with many chapters. However, they all delivered on their promise to give us some truth.
