KUWAIT CITY, November 13: The head of family nurseries in welfare homes linked to the Ministry of Social Affairs, Iman Al-Enezi, said that Kuwait’s experience in approving the step of the “surrogate mother” in embracing orphans from homes over The past 8 years have been successful and effectively contributed to raising the educational achievements and emotional stability of orphaned children, reports Al-Qabas daily. She added that six surrogate mothers who were chosen with great care to take care of the orphaned children. Before being given the task of caring for the children, they went through personal interviews and psychological assessment tests to determine their ability to keep up with the children’s life in the nursery and their potential to embody their positive role as surrogates mothers.

Al-Enezi said: “We have seen a lot of positive things about the presence of surrogate mothers in the last eight years, as they are currently raising 22 children in what she called ‘independent’ homes within the Department of Children’s Homes, equipped with everything they need to help them live next to the children.” She stated that among the positive aspects of their presence is raising the educational level of children in schools, broadening perceptions of assimilation and intelligence, in addition to familiarizing them with the customs and traditions of Kuwaiti society and the ability to communicate with others and help them to realize their future dreams.

Al-Enezi pointed out that surrogate mothers spend most days of the week with the children in the home, with each surrogate mother taking in about 6 children 24/7 for 5 days and going on vacation for two days. She pointed out that surrogate mothers are real mothers to the children of the home and provide them with full care, kindness and tenderness and take pride in the children, all that they lack and support them psychologically, morally, socially, educationally and healthily.

Conditions
Al-Enezi stated that one of the conditions for selecting surrogate mothers is that they must not be less than 35 years old, be from Kuwait, a Gulf national or “Bedouin” so that they can teach the children Kuwaiti customs and traditions and the correct local dialect and have a high minimum secondary school certificate and practical experience in raising children or similar education.

She said that the surrogate mother is an important project that has a clear impact on the development of children’s skills, and “many countries have supported the project financially in recent years, the most important of which is the Awqaf Secretariat, which supported the budget of the project and ensured the payment of the surrogate mothers’ rewards and wages. Al-Enezi explained that the family kindergarten provides children in care homes with a variety of different services that meet all their needs, starting from playgrounds, manual games, educational boards, theater, in addition to a cinema hall. She pointed out that nurseries contain a group of equipped and private homes for each surrogate mother and her children, including a set of rooms and contents that each family provides for their children.

The advantages of implementing the idea include increasing educational and academic achievement of children, high level of public awareness about children, providing moral support and social and psychological care, although the Civil Service Commission has not yet given a post to surrogate mothers. To overcome the problem and achieve the best results for the children in the care homes, the General Secretariat of Awqaf financially supported the surrogate mother project by providing the necessary necessities and the monthly salaries of the female workers within the project due to its importance.
