On Sunday’s episode of Celebrity Family Feud, Steve Harvey received a lesson in colloquialisms from New Zealand actor Rhys Darby.
In the episode that originally aired Aug. 7 on ABC, the host was visibly taken aback by Darby’s response to one of the game show’s prompts.
“‘Passed away’ is a nice way of saying someone died, name a not-so-nice way,” Harvey asked.
Jumping to start the round, contestant Jay Pharoah immediately hit the buzzer as he spurted out a correct answer, “croaked,” and landed his team on the board.
Unfortunately for Pharoah, after three incorrect answers from teammates, the round was stolen by the opposition.
And that’s when things got interesting.
Harvey repeated the question to Darby, who took a moment to think it over before before baffling the host with a very sincere response.
“I’d like to say, ‘carked it’,” the actor smirked.
The studio’s audience roared in wave of laughter while Harvey stood on stage–too stunned to speak.

In an attempt to defend the answer, Darby described what he meant by the statement.
“You know, as in, ‘What happened to that guy?’ Oh, he’s carked it,” Darby explained. “‘Cause it’s short for ‘carcass’.”
Harvey, still confounded, approached Darby’s team as the contestants took turns pronouncing the slang term.
“What the hell’s going on?” said a very puzzled show host to Darby’s teammate, Samba.
“I need subtitles for these guys sometimes, too” Samba joked.
“‘Carked it,’ he’s trying to say. Like turned into a carcass, he’s become a carcass.”
Harvey, who still looked rather rattled, rejected any other offer of explanation and before turning to the board, sighed: “This game’s going to hell right here.”
The term, which primarily is used as slang in Australia and New Zealand, was not on the board.
But, spoiler alert, the What We Do In The Shadows and A Series of Unfortunate Events actor and his team went on to redeem themselves by winning the game and $25,000 for Algalita Marine Research and Education!
