Kottayam: A digital book published by Manorama Books was awarded a special award for Best Book on Cinema at the 68th National Film Awards announced on Friday. The work ‘MT— Anubhavaganlude Pusthakam’, which gives a comprehensive and meaningful account of the colorful literary life of writer MT Vasudevan Nair, was designed by late Anoop Ramakrishnan, who was the design coordinator of Malayala Manorama.

Anup, who shares a perfect psychic connection with MT, designed the book in digital format. It reflects MT’s literary career, which spans more than five decades.

The Odia book ‘Kali Paine Kalira Cinema’ also won a special mention.

“MT – Anubhavaganlude Pusthakam” can undoubtedly be considered as the first multimedia book in Malayalam. This is an abridged version of the DVD collection “MT-yude Lokangal” which was earlier released by “Malayala Manorama” in book format.

Anup Ramakrishan, of ‘Sarovaram’ at Pavangad in Kozhikode, passed away on 7 December 2021 at the age of 52. He was the son of Putenveethil Ramakrishnan and Meera Anup.

Innovative work

The book is known for its groundbreaking efforts. Innovation can be seen everywhere, right from the bold decision not to use the photograph of MT Vasudevan Nair, a man who has touched the heights of fame, as the frontispiece on the title page. A portrait that fits the background of the film “Kadavu” written and directed by MT found expression in the title page. Strikingly enough, the design focus of the title page was on the two letters in the epithet MT. Such bold and innovative initiatives have added a special beauty to the multimedia book.

The content of the book is divided into three parts. The unique multimedia experience created by combining sound and visuals together with the beauty of the written part gives you a whole new feeling.

The first part contains excerpts from interviews of famous people with MT on various occasions. In this segment, around 271 people, including personalities from the fields of cinema and literature, as well as his close friends and relatives, share their deeply personal memories of this literary giant. Reminiscing about special moments with MT by people from different walks of life like Sukumar Azhikode, ONV Kurup, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mammotty, Mohanlal and Mehaboob Koodallur brings to the fore the creative and personal spheres of MT’s eventful life. What’s special about this segment is the ability for readers to hear these personalities using a QR code.

The second segment titled ‘Dialogues’ covers the written format of the interviews conducted by three personalities: Mammootty, who made many MT characters memorable on the silver screen; Artist Namboothiri, who sketched many portraits in periodicals and magazines covering many realistic situations from MT’s novels and stories; and Ashwathi Sreekant, MT’s younger daughter and dancer. All three interviews stand out as special as each brings out the best in the otherwise introverted MT. The informal nature of the interactions makes it even more special. Corresponding pictures are given to the written text. Links to relevant QR codes to view the interviews are also provided.

The third segment contains the scripts of five short films made about MT’s life. The short film ‘Oru Kadavinte Katha’ and ‘Nirmalyam – Vishakkatha Daivathinu’ chronicle the stories behind the making of MT’s films ‘Kadavu’ and ‘Nirmalyam’ respectively. The short film “Appunniyude Yathrakal” deals with MT’s very famous novel “Nalukettu”. ‘Vanaprastha Vazhikal’ delves deep into MT’s spiritual journey to Kudajadri which led to the writing of the story ‘Vanaprastham’. “Enganumundo Kandu?” is a short film that explores the story of “Pariyanam”, a film directed by Hariharan based on the script of MT.

These scripts for the short films, which were completed after a lot of research work, stand out for their authenticity and feel. Many personalities like Kamal Haasan and Ajith have been involved in shaping these scripts. Apart from reading these scripts and enjoying the pictures given along with it, the reader can watch any of these short films live on their mobile phone, tablet or laptop after scanning the corresponding QR code.

The book “MT – Anubhavangalude Pusthakam” has the unique distinction of being attractive to all Malayalis who love MT and all those who love Malayalam even if they cannot follow the language.
