SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (KTIV) – School leaders in South Sioux City, Neb., have already wrapped up interviews with the final four superintendent candidates Monday night
Jason Alexander is the superintendent of the Beatrice Nebraska Public Schools. He has a bachelor’s degree in education from Chadron State, along with a master’s degree in education and a specialist in education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Alexander said he wants to find ways to give kids in the district a good opportunity.
“We have to find ways to provide opportunities for kids, whatever path they choose. They’re going to be successful and we’re going to provide opportunities for them to take the path and be successful and that goes for the people in our building as well,” Alexander said
Derek Ipensen is currently the principal of a high school in Norfolk, Nebraska. He holds a doctorate in education from Doane University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He also holds a specialist education degree and a master’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
He strives to move the area into the future.
“I’m really excited to be here and help move things into the future and take the next steps to put the area where they want to be.” And to really help kids hear from the Southern Sioux to successfully transition into the future,” Ipensen said.
Candidate Ashley O’Dell is the assistant superintendent of the South Sioux City School District.
O’Dell earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Dakota. She received her Master of Education degree and Specialist in Education degree from Wayne State College.
Prior to her current role, she was an assistant principal at South Sioux City High School. She mentioned her connection with the district.
“This place means something to us, it’s home to us. The best things in my life are a result of schools. Whether it’s personal, whether it’s professional,” O’Dell said.
Candidate Ronnie Ortega, who currently serves as principal of Bryan High School for the Omaha Public Schools.
Ortega holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has a master’s degree in school counseling from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. There he also holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and a doctorate in educational leadership.
He said this job stands out to him because of the community.
“There are 244 precincts in Nebraska and there are only 3 that I would consider being a superintendent. This is one of them because it’s bigger than me. It’s about community change, and so I think my strengths are perfectly suited to your challenges here. You have everything in place and you just need strong leadership,” Ortega said.
According to a school district timeline, school officials hope to have a superintendent hire approved and announced by Dec. 12, with the contract beginning July 1, 2023.
