Sonali Phogat’s death has come as a huge shock to the industry fraternity. The 42-year-old woman felt unwell on Monday evening and was taken to St Anthony’s Hospital in Anjuna the next morning, where she was declared brought dead. Four arrests have been made so far in the Sonali Phogat murder case. Police said Sudhir Sangwan (PA of Phogat) has confessed to the crime along with his associate Sukhwinder Singh.
The Goa police said on Saturday that the drug ‘methamphetamine’ given to Sonali was recovered from the toilet of Curlies restaurant in Anjuna-Goa. Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi said investigation revealed that the drugs were supplied by Dattaprasad Gaonkar, who worked as a helper at the Grand Leoney Resort Hotel in Anjuna, where the accused and the deceased were staying.
Sonali had come to Goa on August 22 and was staying at a hotel in Anjuna. Earlier, a CCTV footage showed Sonali struggling to keep her balance and was seen holding on to her accused as he limped into the pub. As the mystery behind Sonali’s death began to unfold, her fellow Bigg Boss contestants Rahul Vaidya, Ali Goni and others are seeking justice and want her killers to be punished.
“We all thought it was a natural death, but all these things that are developing clearly indicate that it was a homicide. All these images send chills down my spine, make me tingle and feel very strangely helpless. She was outright killed by (someone) putting some substance into her food or drink. I hope those responsible are punished severely,” Rahul told Hindustan Times.
Ali Goni said that the CCTV footage is quite disturbing to watch and they are sure that Sonali did not die of natural causes. “One gets affected even by reading the news of a stranger’s death, whereas Sonali was someone I shared a house with. She must get justice and the murderer must be punished. It should be investigated on priority,” he said.
Devoleena Bhattacharjee condoled with Sonali and said that the government and authorities should provide justice to the deceased and her family members. Arshi Khan recalled how Sonali pampered her like a mother when she went for shoots and kept her under control. She is afraid to watch the CCTV video and prays to God to get justice for Sonali.
A Goa court on Saturday granted 10-day police custody to Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Singh. Police have registered offenses under Sections 22 (b), 29 and 25 of the NDPS Act against Curlies restaurant owner Edwin Nunes and Dattaprasad Gaonkar, both of whom have been arrested.
Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi had said that Sangwan had confessed to the crime, saying that after they reached Goa, he along with Singh took Phogat to Curlis on the pretext of a party and mixed some “unpleasant” substance in the pub water and forced the victim to drink it.
