Celebrity cameos are pretty common across most forms of media, and video games are surprisingly not an exception here. Sure, there’s no denying that games don’t see celebrities making an appearance all that often, which is precisely what makes it pretty noteworthy when certain celebrities appear out of nowhere in a video game.
The following games are noteworthy for having pretty great celebrity cameos that generated quite a buzz. Some of them can be easily missed if players don’t take their time to check around, while others are obvious enough that most people will manage to encounter these celebs at some point. Regardless, witnessing these small moments makes for a great time regardless.
10 Drew Carey (The Sims)
One of the oldest and more notable celebrity cameos in gaming came from The Sims. Players who hosted truly grand parties stood a chance of having this popular talk show host join them in the proceedings.
It’s the truly unexpected nature of Drew Carey’s appearance that makes him such a perfect pick for this list. So many people who played The Sims had no idea he even existed in the game until reports came out about this easter egg.
9 Hideo Kojima (Cyberpunk 2077)
There are very few developers that end up transcending their role to become bonafide celebrities in the video game industry. Such is the case with Hideo Kojima, who is easily one of the most recognizable names in the video game industry.
This persona makes a brief appearance in Cyberpunk 2077, a game known for its many cameos featuring various content creators and the like. In the mission “The Heist”, players get an option to check out a bar where Kojima is just hanging out with his buddies.
8 Conan O’Brien (Death Stranding)
Conan O’Brien is one of the most popular and successful talk show hosts of all time. His presence on late-night television will be sorely missed after his departure from a show that turned him into such an icon.
Clueless Gamer was one of his many segments that got really popular on the Conan show. He revealed that he was a part of a game called Death Stranding, appearing in a pretty hilarious and memorable side-quest in the game.
7 Gary Coleman (Postal 2)
Gary Coleman is one of the most popular child actors of all time, and it’s a shame to see how his life panned out post his early years of success. One of his more off-beat appearances comes in Postal 2.
Appearing as himself, Gary Coleman appears in a mall for a meet-and-greet session. True to Postal 2‘s signature brand of comedy, he’s pretty crass and rude, almost compelling players to vent their frustration at him using one of the many weapons in their arsenal.
Kojima is the only person to make two appearances on this list, showing just how popular this video game auteur really is. His work on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was celebrated by the masses, even though he left Konami before realizing his full vision with this game.
He makes an appearance in this game as well. during a mission where he unmasks the Big Boss. While his presence isn’t clear early on, it all comes full circle after he wears his iconic glasses.
5 Buzz Aldrin (Mass Effect 3)
Mass Effect 3‘s ending was pretty controversial and left many fans unhappy. It’s a shame since an otherwise great game was bogged down by the disappointment many players felt near the end and took away from many of its accomplishments.
One thing that many players didn’t realize is that the ending monologue is recited by Buzz Aldrin himself, the second man to ever step on the moon. It’s genuinely surprising that not many people know about this fact!
4 Stan Lee (Marvel’s Spider-Man)
Stan Lee cameos in Marvel products have been a constant since time eternal. The many Marvel movies made these cameos extremely popular in their films, and the game followed suit as well.
While playing through Marvel’s Spider-Man, players will get to a scene where MJ and Peter meet up at a restaurant. The interaction is pretty great, and all of this is capped off with the diner’s owner, Stan Lee himself, talking about how he considered this couple to be his favorite back when they were together.
3 Ricky Gervais (Grand Theft Auto 4)
Grand Theft Auto 4 is a groundbreaking game that is full to the brim with several side activities of its own. This includes the legendary Split Sides comedy club in the game that many people miss out on.
There are several notable names that make an appearance here, with Ricky Gervais being perhaps the most well-known one of the lot. Along with him, other performers include Katt Williams and Frankie Boyle.
2 Lewis Hamilton (Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare)
One of the most underplayed cameos in gaming comes in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Legendary F1 multi-champ Lewis Hamilton makes an appearance as an innocuous engineer that many players might fail to notice.
This engineer, aptly named Carl Hamilton, can be interacted with on board the Retribution before every mission. It’s a neat inclusion in a game that was pretty unfairly lambasted before release.
1 Logic (The Last Of Us Part 2)
Logic is a well-known rapper who’s known to be a huge fan of PlayStation. So, Sony decided to give him a chance to become a part of the PlayStation family by appearing in The Last of Us Part 2.
He appears as one of the Rattlers who finds Ellie strung up in one section of the game. His appearance is pretty brief, with his arrogance leading to his death after he tried to get Ellie bit by a strung-up Clicker.
