SBS encourages all Australians to celebrate Diwali, Deepavali, Bandi Chhor Diwas and Tihar with a distinctive range of content to mark the Indian subcontinental Festivals of Lights, celebrated by over one billion people around the world – including more than a million Australians. To showcase the diversity of the holiday and increase cultural understanding, specially curated programming until October will include documentaries, dramas, films, food programs and recipes on the SBS network.
SBS RadioSBS language programming, including SBS Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Nepali, Punjabi and Tamil, will deliver rich content across radio and digital platforms, engaging audiences to hear how Australians celebrate Diwali in 2022. Enjoy interviews, videos , articles, podcasts and competitions, as well as social engagement and conversation with SBS’s diverse language communities. This includes an explanatory article on the variety of holidays, translated into several languages; a comprehensive guide to Australia’s Diwali festivals; video culture and tradition of rangoli; recipes from India without coverage Chef Sandeep Pandit and renowned Indian chef Damu; podcast about Diwali themed coins released in Australia; and special Diwali greeting videos from the wider SBS Radio team. On the day of Diwali itself (October 24), SBS PopDesi Music Channel will bring the best of Bollywood and classic hits from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

SBS on demand will showcase a wide range of food, travel, lifestyle and 25+ movies ranging from Bollywood and Biography to Romance and Comedy, in Hindi, Punjabi and English. This includes the award-winning Australian film lion about a five-year-old Indian boy who is adopted by an Australian couple and goes in search of his lost family 25 years later, a feature-length documentary Sherpa: Problems on Everest which follows a 2014 expedition entirely from the Sherpa perspective and Date episode investigating the consequences of Sri Lanka’s decision to go 100% organic.
From October 24 to November 4, SBS food primetime will be a feast for the eyes and taste buds David Rocco’s Dolce India series 1 and 2 (5pm) as celebrated Indian-Australian chefs Helly Raicura, Adam D’Silva and Sandeep Pandit celebrate the diversity of Indian cuisine, including an episode dedicated to Diwali sweets, in India without coverage (18 hours). SBS Food will also feature Instagram and TikTok videos, as well as ‘Diwali at Home’ recipes and Kashmiri cuisine on their website. On October 24 SBS World Movies will feature an all-day Diwali movie marathon, plus the prime-time premiere of Warrior Queen of Jhansia historical story of women’s empowerment, at 9:30 p.m. SBS VICELAND will screen an award-winning documentary 2020 Indian space dreams for the launch of the country’s first astronomy satellite with part of the NASA budget, at 8:30 p.m.
SBS Learn – SBS’s dedicated website for teachers – has developed a special Rangoli art activity and resources to help students and families celebrate Diwali. Furthermore, SBS voices commissioned a memoir by Dr Ahona Guha, a Melbourne-based psychologist and award-winning writer of Indian heritage, exploring the importance of community and how her life overlaps with what Diwali celebrates – “the victory of light over darkness …. knowledge over ignorance”. This is a personal piece with family photos from previous Diwali’s.
SBS also supports Diwali community festivals taking place across Australia, including Celebrate India in Melbourne at Federation Square on 29 October.
