Saif Ali Khan is currently on a promotional spree for his upcoming film Vikram Vedha with Hrithik Roshan. While Saif plays the role of matchmaker Vikram, Hrithik Roshan is Veda, a fearsome gangster. Both Vikram and Veda believe that whatever they do is right and this toxic trait brings them face to face with each other. Talking about his character Vikram, Saif said that he is left wing and liberal. However, he felt that he should not say such things in a public forum in this day and age.
During his interview with Biz Asia, Saif spoke about how he disagrees with the thoughts and principles of Vikram, who believes that killing convicted criminals is not a crime and believes that he is a good person. He said that when the mob problem was getting out of hand, there was this urban legend that they wouldn’t show if the criminal was actually shot trying to escape or executed.
“It’s called a ‘meeting’, a ‘fake meeting.’ It’s kind of a horrendous lawsuit…I’m sure it’s totally illegal. But it’s also quite disturbing from a cinematic point of view, and that’s what my character does. But he is convinced that he is a good man because (he thinks) it is required. I’m a lot more… probably a little left, I guess… I don’t know, I probably shouldn’t be saying those things anymore today,” Saif said in the interview.
“But yeah, I’m really liberal and laid-back and I think everyone has a right to a fair trial before sentencing. I am certainly not in favor of executing suspected criminals, which my character seems to enjoy doing,” he added.
Vikram Vedha is a Hindi remake of the 2017 Tamil film of the same name, starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. While Saif is reprising R Madhavan’s role, Hrithik is doing it for Vijay Sethupathi. It is said to be based on the Indian folk tale Vikram aur Betaal. The film is directed by Gayathri and Pushkar, who also helmed the original film.
