The prospects the Bears interviewed this year were generally pleasantly surprised when they first saw the green and the dartboard.
“They don’t expect it,” said the Poles. “You see them having fun and realizing that ‘we’re the Chicago Bears and we’re just here to get to know them a little bit.’ This is not an interrogation. We just want to get a feel for the person and how they communicate and recall some of the things they did on film, what they were taught to do.
“We don’t want to overdo it and make it into something it’s not. Let’s just have a good time and get to know each other.”
The Poles praised coach Matt Eberfluss and his staff for being a valuable part of the evaluation process, both in free agency and the draft.
“We give them loads of players to evaluate and sort through,” Poles said. “What is crucial for us is knowing their role and vision for the player. It is important.
“And then what we do is we all go into the draft room and if it’s free agency or the draft, we’ll go down their roster and talk about where maybe we have discrepancies, where we see something different. If that means we watch more tape and have more discussions, we do it to feel comfortable. There’s going to be times when you agree to disagree, but when you’re all on the same page and seeing things the same way, you feel convicted, which as a general manager is really important to me because I know that this person will be developed because everyone saw him the same way.
“I couldn’t be happier with our coaching staff’s ability to evaluate; their hunger and urgency to do so. It is not a burden for them. They love to do it. Coach Eberfluss is outstanding and that is probably due to his recruiting experience. an outstanding estimator that is truly powerful.”
