City defender Sean Rogan has expressed his pride at achieving a personal landmark after scoring his first professional goal for the club.

The Ireland U21 international scored the Imps’ third goal in a 4-2 win against Everton U21s to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Papa Johns Trophy, and Roughan explained the significance of his strike.

He said: “I feel really good, it’s a proud moment for me.

“When my grandfather passed away a few years ago, I always said that my first goal would be for him. I was thinking about it in the car on the way to the game and I just felt like I could score.

“I heard Mark in the background telling me to go and do the back post. I did and the finish was tough but I focused on keeping the shot low and luckily it went in.”

Tuesday night’s opponents had some success in the race leading up to the game after topping their group and then knocking out Football League rivals Mansfield to reach the last 16.

Although the Toffees’ young side is causing some concern for City, Roughan says the belief and cohesion within the group has ensured the Imps have been able to secure their progress in the competition.

He added: “From our analysis we knew they were going to be tough and so we went into the game with the same focus we always had.

“They looked like a good team and showed they were healthy. They won a lot of tackles, countered well and managed to get us two goals, which a lot of teams haven’t been able to do this season.

“We’ve been undercover a lot of times and I guess we’ve learned how to deal with it. We always believed in ourselves and knew that if we were compact and stuck together, we would be able to take that pressure and cause them more problems.
