The site is over 130 years old.
This historic sugar refinery also serves as an occasional film set.
Rogers Sugar Mill, now Lactic Inc., is situated on the Vancouver shoreline in Coal Harbour at 123 Rogers Street.
The sugar refinery, originally named B.C. Sugar, was founded in 1890 by Benjamin Tingely Rogers, who saw an opportunity for Canada’s west coast to refine its own sugar rather than pay the high costs of transporting it by rail from Montreal.
Vancouver was believed to be an ideal location for a sugar refinery because of its proximity to the Philippines, the primary source of most of Canada’s sugar. The refinery also imported raw sugar from Australia, Asia and Central America, and owned cane sugar refineries in Fiji and the Dominican Republic. B.C. Sugar also owned beet sugar refineries in Alberta and Manitoba.
The sugar refinery was built just four years after Vancouver was incorporated, when Rogers was only 24 years old, and was the first major industry in Vancouver that wasn’t based on logging or fishing. At one time, it was also Vancouver’s largest employer.
