The first two episodes of The Rings of Power took viewers on a journey to where it all began: Middle Earth and introduced us to characters we know and don’t know from Tolkien’s world. Of the many new characters created for The Rings of Power, mother-son duo Bronwyn and Theo, managed to stand out. Played by Nazanin Boniadi from How I Met Your Mother fame and the new boy on the block, Tyro Muhafdin, these two roles were made for it Lord of the Rings background story. We’ve already seen Theo wield Sauron’s sword and Bronwyn slay an orc, and with all the theories suggesting they have a lot more to offer, we ask the two actors about their characters and what to expect.
Tyro says this is just the beginning. “Theo is trying to find a purpose for his existence, like any teenager, but he’s exposed to something extremely powerful and uncontrollable. He begins to find his purpose through this sword, which we all know has a dark history.” Tyro finds solace in spending time with the sword as he is conflicted about his mother having a relationship with an elf. Although the mother-son duo have a love-hate relationship in the series, Nazanin stated that her character Bronwyn would go to any lengths to be with his son. “It’s a relationship of anger and tension, but what holds them together is the underlying love.” Interestingly, the actors’ on-screen relationship has apparently carried over to off-screen as well, with Nazanin sharing that she’s almost become Tyro’s second mother in real life. “I really love him and feel like he’s part of my family. I believe our kinship carries over to the screen,” she says.
Bronwyn is a healer in the series and Nazanin, having been a pre-student, finds this relatable. “I wanted to be a doctor at one point and I was able to channel the healer personality in me for that role. Also, my background as an activist helped me bring the resilience, compassion and tenacity that the character needs.” Tyroe, however, had a more challenging experience playing Theo. “I’m not like Theo, who is very serious. I can never be that serious. Having fun is my goal in life,” he says. But what he shares with his role is how they both suppress emotions. “Theo doesn’t express sadness and anger until it reaches the boiling point. I believe a lot of people my age go through that phase. I’m glad I can represent them.”
Nazanin, who was previously part of Hotel Mumbai (2018), hopes to work in Bollywood films in the future. “My parents grew up watching Bollywood cinema, and in Iran the movies are still extremely popular. I believe that Indian cinema brings a lot of joy to the world and it would be amazing to have a chance to be a part of it.” She continues to share her love for India. “I remember him with his kindness and warmth. The stay here was most memorable.”
Talking about the series, she believes in it The Rings of Power it should be consumed as the fantasy experience it was meant to be. “A good fantasy transports us to a world that is both timeless and timely. Lord of the Rings is a rare franchise that connects with people no matter when or where they live. ‘Rings of Power’ is more of an exploration of human dilemmas and emotions.” Tyro backs her up: “We touch on hope, love, trust and the ever-present battle between good and evil. They are present in everyone’s life and I believe the series can create a cathartic experience.”
Perhaps that’s why Nazanin calls working on this series a “transformative experience.” “We filmed during the pandemic, at a time when the whole world was closed. We were one of the few very lucky actors working at the time, as all the shooting took place in New Zealand, a country that was free of the virus.” She recalls feeling great gratitude. “A lot of my colleagues didn’t have a lot of work and realized that I could have been in their shoes. This realization made me a more appreciative and grateful person.” Tyro considers the time he spent filming for the series a phase of self-exploration. “I count my blessings. I was too young to experience this magnitude of kindness. I also started to learn a lot about myself and now I have a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a person and as an actor.”
Nazanin believes that “destiny” brought together the cast of The Rings of Power. “Our creator JD Payne has often said that he brought us into the series because he saw a piece of middle earth in our eyes. All of our personal and professional experiences came together to create something beautiful,” she signs off.
