One of the biggest and the most popular music festivals in the world, Coachella, finally returned after a three- year hiatus. Grammy winners Doja Cat, Arooj Aftab, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Swedish House Mafia, and The Weekend were few of the many artists lined up to perform at the weekend festival. However, the highlight of the event was Raveena Aurora, who became the first Indian woman to perform at Coachella. The festival was the first stop in her North America tour.

The Indian-origin singer treated fans with an unexpected cover of the Bollywood song “Dum Maro Dum” from the film Hare Krishna Hare Ram (1971).

Who is Raveena Aurora?
Aurora is a 25-year-old musician who is known to blend contemporary R&B with traditional music from the South Asian diaspora into her art. She became popular with her first track “Shanti” in 2017, and later released an independent album titled Lucid. The album was inspired by stories from her personal life.

Born to North Indian Sikh parents, and raised in Queens and Connecticut, Aurora has grown up listening to Bollywood songs, with a side of Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. She started writing songs and experimenting with different genres at the young age of 13.

Prior to her, Ritesh D’Souza of B.R.E.E.D was the first Indian artist to perform at the annual music and art festival. He was joined by vocalist Tara Mae in 2015. This year Coachella has a slew of Asian talent performing on the stage, including Mongolian rock band The Hu, Indonesian singer NIKI, and Korean hip-hop trio EPIK HIGH.

Coachella 2022, which takes place across two weekends, began on April 15th, and will conclude on April 24th, 2022.
