Prince Harry wrote King Charles a “deeply personal” letter before returning to the UK for Prince Philip’s funeral.
Harry wrote the note to his father in an attempt to explain himself after their relationship “hit rock bottom” following his departure from the royal family and subsequent interviews. It’s no secret that the royal family wasn’t impressed with Harry after his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, and the Duke tried to explain himself in the memo.
Charles was “very hurt” by his son’s decision to take part in the interview, alongside his wife Meghan Markle, where the pair made a series of accusations against the family. The couple revealed that an unnamed family member had commented on how “bleak” their unborn children would be, while Meghan claimed she did not get help when she struggled with suicidal thoughts.
The Mirror reports that Harry has been “forced to write letters” to his father due to a “complete breakdown of communication”. In the letter in question, Harry “outlines his reasons for leaving” while promising to “respect the institution”, sources revealed.
Elsewhere in the controversial interview, Harry told Oprah that his father and brother were “trapped” in the institution and wouldn’t be able to leave if they wanted to. Royal insiders later came forward to say Charles and William were left outraged by the remarks.
A royal source said: “To be honest, Harry didn’t really know what to expect before he got home, so he reached out before seeing everyone.”
There was a kind of unspoken agreement between everyone to leave whatever was on each person’s mind and concentrate solely on supporting the Queen before Prince Philip’s funeral. The source added: “The feeling in the camp was that it was neither the time nor the place to discuss things, especially at such an emotional time for all involved.”
Despite the rocky relationship between the Sussexes and the firm, it is now being reported that the couple may be considering a return to the UK. The Duke of Sussex is said to have contacted William in the hope of “calling for a truce” after he made a series of bombshell claims against his family.
Despite the drama, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes it would be a bad idea for the couple to return to the royal family as it could leave them “humiliated”.
“It would be one of the strangest events in royal history if they came back after all the attacks. It would be a humiliation for Meghan and Harry,” he said. “The idea that, after everything that has happened, that Meghan and Harry could just come back is beyond incredible.
