Prince Harry says the ‘hunt for a royal racist’ began after the Oprah interview
The Duke of Sussex was questioned why his and the Duchess of Sussex’s claim about an unnamed royal expressing concern about how dark their unborn son’s skin would be did not appear in a Netflix documentary or his book.
Harry accused the British press of sparking a “royal racist hunt” after the Oprah interview and warned CBS’s 60 Minutes interviewer Anderson Cooper that he would not discuss the matter further. Cooper said: “It wasn’t brought up on Netflix or in the book. Why?”
Harry replied: “The way the British press reacted to it was pretty typical. There was like a hunt for the royal racist. None of us believe that this comment or this experience or this opinion is based on racism.
“Unconscious bias, yes. But I think you talk to most mixed-race couples around the world that the white side of the family would wonder, whether they talk openly about it or to each other, what the kids are going to look like. The key word here was concern, not curiosity. But the way the British press, what they turned it into, was not what it was.
Cooper says, “You’re behind what happened, but you just didn’t feel the need to . . .”
Harry says, “No, but what else did I say at the end of the interview with Oprah?” Cooper “That you’re not going to discuss it anymore. Harry nods his head.
