‘Out Of Here’: Celebrities Exit Twitter After Elon Musk’s Takeover

Many celebrities have vowed and already left Twitter after Elon Musk’s acquisition
of the platform.

Elon Musk taking over Twitter has made many celebrities in Hollywood leave the platform.

After Musk named himself “chief Twit,” fired top executives, and announced his plans to change Twitter’s content moderation system and bands, high-profile individuals and celebrities fear these changes will make Twitter a haven for hate speech and inappropriate content on the platform. As a result, many have vowed to leave Twitter.

April of this year was the first time when billionaire tech mogul Musk shared his plan of buying the company. During that time, actor and activist Jameela Jamil, comic book writer Erik Larsen, activist Shaun King, wrestler Mick Foley, and others came forward to condemn his move and said they would no longer use Twitter if he bought it. The $44 billion sale just finalised recently in October 2022.

More stars have grown critical of his actions and motivations over time, especially after his official takeover. Here is a list of some of the celebrities who plan to leave.

Shonda Rhimes

Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton creator, Shonda Rhimes tweeted to her approximately 2 million Twitter followers on Saturday afternoon, two days after the acquisition, that she is not hanging around for whatever Musk has planned, ending her tweet with a “Bye.” She has not tweeted since, as per reports.

Sara Bareilles

The singer-songwriter said she was leaving Twitter through a tweet she published on October 30. “Welp. It’s been fun Twitter. I’m out. See you on other platforms, peeps,” she wrote. She added that Twitter was just not for her.

Toni Braxton

The singer said she was shocked by the changes she saw after Musk acquired the company and vowed to not use it. She wrote that she is shocked and appalled at some of the ‘free speech’ she has seen on this platform since its acquisition.

“Hate speech under the veil of ‘free speech’ is unacceptable; therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons and other POC,” she added.

Alex Winter

The Bill & Ted actor kept his promise of leaving the platform as his account is no longer active. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his last tweet was a meme of Musk taking over the platform.

Ken Olin

The actor, director, and producer announced his departure on October 28, stating the need to protect democracy, be kinder, save the planet and find peace in the world.

In another tweet, he said he was going to be using Tribel Social, an alternative platform that promotes itself as being free of hate speech and “fake news.”

Mick Foley

In April itself, Foley said that he would be giving serious thought to leaving Twitter for good in the near future. He added that he does not have a good feeling of where the platform is headed. As of October 31, he deactivated his Twitter account.

Erik Larson

The comic book writer who wrote The Amazing Spider Man series, quite early on, promised to delete his account if the billionaire accomplished his goal of buying the company. Since then, Larsen has left the platform.

Jameela Jamil

She first tweeted that she would be leaving Twitter in April. In a sarcastic tone, she said that the good thing about Elon buying twitter is that she will finally leave and stop being a complete menace to society on the platform.

Her most recent tweet is from October 26— one day before Musk officially bought the company. If she is to keep her promise, she won’t return till Musk controls the platform.
