MACOMB, IL – – Five candidates will interview to become the new director of the Western Illinois University Campus Recreation Center from Monday, March 20th through Friday, March 31st.

Candidates include WIU Campus Recreation Center Interim Director Brian Thomas (March 20), Utah State University Campus Recreation Center Assistant Director Jason Thornton (March 23), Recreation Center Associate Director of Facilities and Operations of the University of Pennsylvania Brigham Phillips (March 27), Henderson Parks and Recreation Director Chris Stachewicz (March 29) and Edgewood College Strength and Conditioning Coach and Fitness Center Director Romarik Setoji (March 31).

Thomas has served as Interim Director of the Campus Recreation Center since 2022. Previously, he served as Associate Director (2021-22), Assistant Director of Fitness Services (2018-21), Fitness Coordinator and Personal Trainer (2014-18) at the Center for recreation on the WIU campus. He also served as an adjunct instructor of kinesiology at WIU in 2022.

Thomas received his BS in Exercise Science in 2011 and his MS in Kinesiology in 2013 from WIU.

Thornton has served as the Assistant Director of Facilities and Risk Management for the Utah State University Campus Recreation Center since 2021. He was previously the Associate Director of West Center Operations at Winthrop University Recreation Services in Rock Hill. South Carolina (2019-21), Assistant Director of Facilities for Missouri State University Campus Recreation (2016-19), Interim Coordinator and Graduate Assistant for Facility Operations for Centers, LLC (2014-16), and PEL Class Instructor ( 2014-15) at Marshall University (Huntington, WV ).

Thornton earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from The College at Brockport (Brockport, New York) in 2014 and a master’s degree in sports administration from Marshall University in 2016.

Phillips has served as the associate director of facilities and operations for Penn State University’s campus recreation center since 2019. Previously, he served as assistant director of facilities and operations (2016-19) and facilities coordinator (2012-16) at the university of the Iowa Department of Recreational Services.

Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from St. Ambrose University in 2008 and a master’s degree in recreation, parks and tourism administration from WIU in 2011.

Stachewicsz has served as Parks and Cemeteries Manager for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation in Henderson, KY since 2021. He was previously the Deputy Director of Recreation for the City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation in Clarksville, TN (2021), Director of Campus Recreation for the University of Tennessee-Martin (TN) (2018-19), Associate Director of Recreational Sports for the University of Texas at El Paso (TX) (2016-18), Superintendent of Parks and Facilities for the Village of Lincolnwood ( IL) (2014-15), Coordinator of Aquatics for the University of Illinois at Chicago (2009-14) and Coordinator of Aquatics for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2006-08).

Stachewicsz received his BS in Exercise Science, Aquatics from Ball State University (Muncie, IN) in 2003 and his MS in Education and Workforce Development from Southern Illinois University in 2006.

Setoji has served as the Fitness Center Director and Strength and Conditioning Coach at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, since 2019. He previously served as Assistant Athletic Director (2016-19) and Campus Director and Residence Hall Director (2016-19). for the University of Valley Forge in Phoenixville, PA, personal trainer and health and wellness coach for The Exercise Coach and 24 Hour Fitness in Colorado Springs, CO (2015-16) and sports performance specialist at Revolution Specialized Fitness and Physical Therapy in Cranberry , PA, (2014).

Setoji earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburgh.
