HAZELSLADE, England – Rising redshirt sophomore Alessia Nobilio won the English Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship in playoff fashion at Beau Desert Golf Club Sunday. Representing her native country of Italy, Nobilio birdied the third extra hole to defeat Denmark’s Christina Thouber.
Nobilio, who shot 74-68-74-71 for the tournament, birdied the 71st and 72nd holes to tie Thouber at +7 to par to go to extra holes.
To get to that point, Nobilio was tasked with completing an up and down on the par-5 18th hole after hitting into a green-side bunker on her approach shot.
“On the 18th, I was very nervous. I know I had that chance (to force a playoff),” Nobilio said. “I hit it to the green and missed it but I’m good at bunker shots so I thought I could make birdie.”
She did just that, dropping an eight-foot putt.
Nobilio sealed the victory with a 20-foot birdie putt from down and across the slope on the third extra playoff hole on the par-4 1st. Nobilio claimed the silverware in front of her father, Alfonso Nobilio, who hadn’t seen her compete in two years.
“I wish I could spend more time with him on the golf course,” Nobilio said. I grew up with him on the course and it’s a big thank you to him. I’d also like to dedicate this win to my grandfather, Dante, who has not been well recently and also to my mum Chiara who I know was cheering me on from Italy!”
This marks Nobilio’s first victory of the offseason leading into her sophomore year.
